When I drive through Memphis, 2-4 times a year, I always have a gun in my hand. Not in the seat, not in my lap, unholstered, spare mag on the console and my Glock in my hand. Fuck that place.

A company I used to work for had an office in Memphis that I went to twice. They found a dead body in the empty lot behind the office. They had a guard dog service drop dogs off every evening and had razor wire inside and outside the building. No female could be at the office by herself. Someone stole the wheels off of one of the office worker's cars and left a note demanding $200 for return of the wheels. She went to the bank, got the cash, left it under the wiper blade and had her wheels back 30 minutes later.

I never took my gun off unless I was in the shower or asleep.

I'll back up what the others say. Do not stay in Mem. Stay in Cordova, or Germantown, and the good looking areas down near Southhaven. I worked for several years in Memphis, at Lamar and Kimble in an electronics repair shop. No retail sales. The goblins left us alone because they all wanted their stuff fixed, but we were constantly prepared, boss had a shotgun at the desk and a 1911 under the cash register, and the counter area locked off away from the rest of the shop. Nasty ass hookers trying to swap stank for a cheeseburger at the McD's . That kind of place. Be aware of your surroundings. Beale is ok mostly due to the police presence there, but be VERY careful. If it looks like a bad neighborhood, it's probably worse than you think.

As far as tourist, depending on your personal level of situational awareness, I'd say Southaven isn't a bad option.

There was a shooting at the corner of Beale the other day at some club.

When I go through Memphis I drive as fast as I can through Memphis and leave at least one car length ahead of me a stoplights. I also make sure my CCW is next to me ready to go.

Other than Graceland and Sun Record Studio Memphis is a complete waste!

Like anything else if you look like you fit in the area and know what you're doing, most times you'll be fine. But you have to admit, the place has been going to crap. Friend of mine I used to work with moved to Oakland a few years ago because his neighborhood went to crap. He used to live a few streets down from where that cop got shot Dec 14th. Back 7~8 years ago I'd spend the night at his place sometimes. You can't get me to drive down his old street at night now.

I'm certainly not a pussy - I did in-home service on big screens for years. I've been in some truly bad areas of town, and I'm not blind. Sure, things are usually OK, and if you have to deal with it, you do. But if vacationing in an unfamiliar area, there's no sense borrowing trouble. Lots of stupid wanna be gangsters out there, no need to tempt fate. I remember when there was a big nice mall with an ice skating rink, and nice stores on American Way, and they tore that multi-million dollar 885,627sq foot thing down due to crime and murder over there. So, yes, the place is going to crap, and has been for years.

This, really.

Don't stay in Memphis. Even the nicer places aren't all that safe. Before you go, set up a fake wallet.
I call it my Memphis wallet.
You know those credit card applications that include those plastic or cardboard credit card looking things. Collect a bunch of those and put them in a wallet with 2 or 3 one dollar bills. When someone robs you, if you don't kill them first, give them the fake wallet and run, or get a few feet away then shoot.

If they persist, get PISSED with them and ask "Do you wanna go to fucking 201 tonight?"

Will say this with some discretion, because I don't want the source to get in trouble. Wife and I  happened upon a Memphis official and we asked them some questions prior to us visiting Memphis. We were told where to go to, to be basically safe. And we were told some insider info about some "famous" eateries, that we decided not to go to after hearing what we did. Yeah I know, sounds like friend of a friend type shit but this person was legit and their info worked out  for wife and I. Taking the interstate "loop" around Memhis was a sightseeing experience also. Like driving past the lions cage at a zoo for the most part.

These guys are being honest with you.  Memphis is a Third world shit hole and the nicest people there are assholes (as opposed to murdering anal rapists).  If you are a normal guy that loves your family, please take the good advise offered in this thread and don't stay there over night.

I saw where one funny poster mentioned to visit Orange Mound.  I was advised as a teenager that's the place to go if I was looking to get my white ass killed.  That was 20 years ago and from all reports things have not improved.

If you don't walk away with anything else, remember this; Memphis makes Sodom and Gomorra look like Branson.
