Quoted: There seem to be a lot of people carrying shotguns and rifles with them at the same time. Why is that? Are you really planning on humping that much gear? It just sounds liek overkill to me. I would feel very prepared with my AR and a sidearm. Even just my AR would be fine with me.
Maybe if I was driving somewhere I could see throwing an extra weapon or two in the back of the truck, but I sure wouldn't want to carry a weapon system that was redundant. Maybe I'm missing something.
Anyone care to explain?

in going into combat, in an urban setting,,the shot gun is your friend,,
in close quarters, inside concrete buildings, pistol and rifle rounds tend to recochet, like BB's as most rifle ammo is steel core..not so true with a hand gun unless useing copper or brass jacketed rounds.
the shotgun with a 000 lead round equates in a small, soft pellet which is safer for yourself and any team members with you..
the shot gun would be a secondary weapon as is your handgun and only a limited amount of rounds would be carried and the overall length would be minimal for functionality. ie: 12 to 14" barrel, pump action, cut off or pistol grip stock.
in non urban envrionments it is fairly useless so that having a team member carry one as sole weapon would leave them undergunned. In the urban setting, a team would have a shotgun, full sized, maximum round capasity issued as a primary weapon to one member for point work primarialy.
The hand gun does fulfill this close combat duty and can be reasonably safe in its use, but the shotgun does a much better job.
