It's things like this that remind me to be very thankful no matter how bad my shitstorm seems.

ACtually, my sister has always brought me strenght.  I am not really sad over this.  I think she wants to die and has decided to do so.

She'll still eat cookies because she loves those....just nothin' else.

No on e has ever expected her to last this long.  This is hardest on my parents.  Way back when my mother was preggers with her she was around lots of pesticides and the doctors think that is what caused the retardation.  Can you imagine going thru life thinking you are the cause for your daughters handicap?

I know that's what my parents have lived with all these years.  I come from a family of 10 kids so having a mentally handicapped child was way to much for my parents to handle on top of all the other kids.  So they had to turn her over to the state back then due to financial and family difficulties.  We always  had visitation rights and all, but not until recently have my parents had more say in her medical chpices.

I am not clear how it all works and what is all involved.  But what happens to her I don't think is entirely up to my parents.  So I am not sure who has ultimate say in what happens to her and so forth.

So.....my parents are going to see her today, I'll know more later.

Well, it sounds like you have made peace with her decision.
I hope that brings you some comfort.
And I hope the state doesn't make things worse on your family than they need to be.

I know exactly how your mother feels, or somewhat.  I was told by 3 MDs [at once] that I probably caused my son's autism.  I got pregnant with my son at the end of May and went to one hellacious Graduation party.  Got rip roaring drunk [had way too much fun!] and they told me that was what probably caused his autism.  I had no clue I was pregnant [I think it was only a week after I conceived].  Doctors can be cruel that say things like that.  I think there's an important lesson to learn about the value of each human life from handicaps.  I think it prepares us in ways we have no idea about.  My daughter who is 14 has troubles coping at times with her brothers handicap.  He says things that embarrass her [she's embarrassed for him so to speak] and she wants to always protect him, when she clearly can't.  I have to remind her that for some reason she's the little sister of a boy with autism and she's going to be able to contribute to the world some day for it.

Decisions like this are always difficult. I am by no means second-guessing, just offering my perspective.  Each situation is unique.

My grandmother got to the point where she wasn't awake or aware enough to eat or drink.  We arranged for hospice care, kept her comfortable, and let her go.  We always need to consider what quality of life we are making people live by maintaining them.  I tell family members of patients all the time, "There is a difference between doing something for someone, and doing something to them."

Prayers.

Sorry to hear that Sarge.

Not to be crass but...
I hope, for the sake of all involed, that it doesn't turn into a 'Terry Schiavo' sort of situation if/or when the time comes.

God bless her.
