I had a close encounter with ornithology today as well. Unfortunately it wasn't as cute. I was bashing through the brush when I literally stepped on a rough grouse. She scared the hell out of me. I took about two more steps and then it hit me, I figured she was on her nest.  I turned around and pulled back the brush to find two cute little chicks flopping around with their guts hanging out their asses. . I stomped them both out of their misery and asked her for forgiveness.  What a shitty way to start a nice hike.

Geez, I'd feel absolutely terrible after that

That's the sauce base.  You want to deep fry a kestrel because the fat content is low and they can dry out.  I like mine wrapped in bacon and drizzled in bernaise.

we get ospreys pretty often.  I work across US1 from the Indian River Lagoon so there are tons of birds around.  I've seen Bald Eagles too.  We also get never ending pairs of Sand Hill Cranes too.  Quite possibly the stupidest bird to ever live.  These things wouldn't have the sense enough to get out of the way of a stampede of buffalo if it were to come bearing down on them.

Distinction doesn't matter anymore.

I've seen a couple of small raptors in DC. One landed in front of a Five Guys, glared at everybody, walked around, and then flew off.

I've also seen a lot fewer pigeons.

So far on my commute this week I've seen at least 5 osprey and 1 bald eagle (being chased by an osprey). I remember as a kid that seeing an Osprey was an event.

No love here for the deadly American Kestrel?
I would have petted him but he looked like he might claw my eyes out.

Awesome pic.

When I lived down in Ohio, we had tons of those buggers, they're cool as hell. They'd sit on the phone/power lines, and watch........then dive bomb something in the ditch fauna. Maybe mice or something.

Don't see them here too often. We have lots of other cool raptors though. I pretty often see sharp shinned hawks snag sparrows from our hedge, and last winter a cooper's hawk snagged and ate a bunny on the terrace. Blood and hair all over the snow, looked like a bunny grenade went off.

Very cool.
I see a lot of ospreys while fishing, I think they're my favorite raptor.

A classic example of why common names are confusing.

Both names apply to Falco sparverius, and that one is a male ... the females have only one stripe on their face..

I had to google birds of prey on New Mexico to find out what it was.

I was really amazed he let me get so close.
