A wrought iron ring used for stretching hides. Small end gets the hole started then you pull it through then pass leather cord or sinew to stretch hides for tanning.
Great trade item for native Americans as metallurgy was not their long suit. You try to punch 300 holes around a fresh bear or Buffalo hide for drying. using a knife. |

I have to say the pot holder theory is wrong in that the hooks face out and the Item in question they both face in.
The offset lets you have leverage to expand the hole. Personally I saw Hopi women using a similar item to stretch goatskins. But AZ is a long way away. |
