All of you can take a big flying leap. [:D] I'm 5'8" with about 50# to lose before I get back to my "fighting" weight. Just starting at working out again after too many years of neglecting myself. One plus, the doctor told me that I have one of the lowest cholesterols he's ever seen and my cardio is med-school perfect.

I hear ya!

Some of you guys don't understand, and I'm making no excuses, but when I was in college, I was in SHAPE, (well for an offensive tackle[8D])

I now have and am dealing with the following;

Herniated disk(s)
3 crushed vertabrae (Dumbass Highschool coach)
My feet were crushed in High School, and I played with broken feet in college.  Now, half or so of both Navicular bones removed from my feet (After breaking more than 16 times, total)
Multiple bone spurs in big toe joints (they want to put a Selastic joint implant in)
And I was informed last time my right foot broke, that my biggest problem was NO cartilidge in my ankles, and not a broken bone.
Every finger and one thumb has been broken, some more than others (Now arthritic)
Ripped the ligaments (all of them) in my elbow
Seperated both shoulders (don't know how many times)

I now have a doctor telling me I should NEVER run, so I don't have to have ankles replaced (not a very good series of procedures) before I'm in my 60's - 70's

If not for Vioxx, I might not be as active as I am, even the lkittle I do now.

In college, I played football, and was the match director / tight prop for our Rugby team, kickboxed off-season, ran a 4.76 40 yard dash (remember, I was 310lbs.) benched 485lbs, and thought I'd never be hurt, and when I was, I could tough through it.  Now, I re-broke both my feet two years ago, just showing my Little League studs how to hit a baseball with authority.  Ten years ago, I was tennis champion of my Corporation.  Now, I suck!

My wife says she married a 60 year old man,.  I am 42!

My saviour may have arrived, though.

I do OK *walking* on a treadmill, and I'm doing that a lot.  But at my weight, riding a bike (something I've always loved) can be painful! (numbing, if you follow my drift)  I finally installed one of the *crotchless* seats on my Hybrid bike, and I can ride again.

So when you feel bad about your body, or you wanna crack on us *fat guys* or don't "respect" us.  Try walking in our shoes.  We weren't all *always* slobs, and / or lazy asses.

All this, and now my right elbow started hurting so much again, that I can't draw my concealed weapon!  Good thing I practice with both hands.

Sorry for the rant[soapbox]  Some days I get mad about not being able to run without something giving out!  That and I've started dieting this week!

I am 6'2", 280lbs, 48 inch waist. I have a large frame so I carry my weight well. Yes I'm one of the "Big Dudes" that have gotten so much attention on this thread. I just recently started eating right, running 6 days a week. I stopped lifting weights and switched to isometrics, stretching(of course), I do push ups and sit ups to keep & tone the muscle mass I already have. I train Aikido 3 to 4 times a week in the dojo. This includes technique practice, physical training, and meditation(breath exercises) for Ki extension. So far I have lost 25lbs. I've got another 80 or so to go. I recommend hydroxycut to jump start your metabolism. I am trying to get in shape so I can join the National Guard. Wish me luck!!! Get off your duffs and get moving!!! I did it, so can you....

I shouldn't do this but here it goes...

6'2" @325lbs with a 44"waist and 56"chest.  I'd like to get down to 250lbs or so but I need to make the time to actually start eating rightand working out more than three times a week.  My wife constantly nags because she knows that I sometimes go a day or or longer without eating and I almost never eat breakfast.  I'm so busy with school and work that I literally forget to eat.  Oh I do get hungry but, usually there is so much stuff going on that I'll forget until I get severe hunger pains or get "the shakes."  Then I eat a ton(think whole 6-8lb chicken) because I'm so hungry.

BigGuns,

I feel your pain bro,  I'm going in to get the poor little sezmoid bone that's crushed removed from my right foot this week. Their also going to take part of my 4th and 5th metatarsals that are all ground up and won't heal.

What "shape" is an offensive tackle supposed to be anyway? My favorite quote when our strenght and conditioning coach (lucifer) would tell us to get in shape was "Hey, round is a shape!"

I've got the same back issues to, I never crushed any disks but have the spinal wear of a 55 year old.  I'm 31 now.  I think if I'm careful and keep taking calcium and stuff I won't get too much worse.

Where did you play at? I was at BYU, Left OT.  I just loved it, at least the hitting anyway. That's about the only part I really really miss.  And the comeraderie.  My managers now are always trying to get us to do some dumb team building exercise and it just makes me shake my head.  They have no clue.

Oh for the stats, I'm 6'5" and about 315 now. I'm a 58 chest and 46 waist. I've got a little gut but hey, I worked hard for that thing!  I'm back on Atkins again so I'm dropping weight again.  I usually stabilize around 285.

BigGuns you KILLED my record for most weight loss at a time.  That's phenomenal, you must have been hurting!  I lost 16lbs in a game once when I had pneumonia and couldn't hold anything down, I might have lost more but they kept IV'ing me w/fluids while the D was holding. I just kept the little IV tag taped inside my glove.  Most of my memories of that game are the Pink Floyd variety. Disjointed and semi-coherent. Good times, good times......

You were in the big-time, Matt.  I started at The Citadel, but quickly decided that was not for this beach-bred kid.  I then played for Troy State in Alabama.  They were so wise, that being I was a right guard (from a high school that threw about 7 times all year) my whole life, that I would make a great left tackle!  I am only 6'1" so I had to weigh a lot not to be carried back to the QB, cause I had no leverage!

I miss the hitting, too, and our O-line always was a tight group, and knew what everybody was up to.  Like a bunch of old ladies.   They used to introduce new defensive backs to me, and tell them I was the reason they would learn not to stand around pile-ups!  Hey, it's the only time those little "pretty* guys slowed down enough to plant them!

My single practice weight loss record, was only 6 lbs different than the following day, and I ended up in the hospital with 8 other guys.  If not for my best friend (left guard), I might have died.  I mean, I couldn't hardly breath, as everything was cramping, and I downed about 3 gallons of Gatoraid, which simply was pouring out of my pores as fast as I drank it.  He ran into the cafeteria, and got the trainer out of dinner (was about 8:30PM, and we were just arriving) and he got me to the infirmiry and started two IV's.

We had lost two games in a row, and coach decided we needed bigger balls, so he ran 1st team offense against 1st team defense, 20 yard-line and in *LIVE* for three days straight.  He wanted us to be tougher.  He lasted through the end of the following year.  I did get to play for Chan Gailey, though, and that was a good experience.

Good luck with the surgeries coming up.  I had great success after having my Navicular bones out.  Regular pain went away, and a lot of other foot pain from walking weird went away too.  Keep me abreast of the Metatarsal surgery!  I've been putting similar procedures off for a few years, now.

Didn't you just love how they'd either crumple like foil or just fly with their arms and legs all over the place? I loved that!  I got a sweet blindside on a DB once on a pulling play.  I'll never forget the look in his eyes when he realized what was about to happen. [%|]

That's scary, especially knowing what we know now after Corey Stringer and some of the others.  You were in a lot worse place to play for the heat and humidity.  Here in Utah, as long as you were sweating you were fine cause it's so dry.  Only once I got too hot and dehydrated and quit sweating.  I got all pink and dizzy and my temp shot up to 104 real fast but the 2 dozen trainers we had standing around recognized it and got me fixed up fast.   I don't know HOW you took the humidity. I spent some time playing ball in New York and holy cow, the humidity was horrible.  I hated that.

Don't you love how some coaches think a good surgury or maybe a few concussions and a boatload of deep contusions will toughen you up?!  Unfortunatly a lot of coaches lack not only strategy but also logic or brains.  I've seen it a lot.

Keep me abreast of the Metatarsal surgery!  I've been putting similar procedures off for a few years, now.

I had a piece of my 5th metatarsal removed last year and my foot felt TONS better after I healed. I had really bad pain in my right foot on the outside edge and so constantly rolled in on the inner edge and ball when I walked.  At 300+ pounds I made some strange looking wear patterns on my shoes.  After it was removed I started walking normally on that foot as soon as I healed.  That bone was totally munched though. My guard stomped on it quite a few times all season. It would heal on, then break off, then heal on, then break off.  I used to have to [brace yourself] go in at halftime and have our Ortho Surgeon take two needles and wiggle it back into place so it would go back in my foot.  It was poking out the side for about 5 games.  I kept the bone and it's all all these little gouges from the Doc poking it around during games. I got a *LOT* of cortizone that year. Whew.

Did you get bunions after you had your sezmoids out? I am starting to get some shift on my left foot already so that'll have to be fixed. I don't think my right sez is broken though. After I got the metatarsal out it never hurt anymore.

Once you get the broken ones fixed, oh it feels better, but foot surgury KILLS. It took me a lot of painkillers before I could sleep for the first few days. After that it was OK.

Good luck, I'll let you know how the other one goes when I get it out after deer season in a month or so.

I hear you!  And I find it hillarious now, that they let me walk out, saying I was ambulatory.  Right up until the meds wore out, I was ambulatory, sortof.  Getting the needle work at halftimes is SICK, dude!  You remind me of a cousin of mine who played four games with "shin splints" until they discovered he had a broken leg.

As to humidity, I grew up in Florida, and pretty much never came off the field during a game, so it wasn't too bad in Alabama, other than the few times coaches would freak out.  It took them some getting used to the fact that I didn't wear anything but a jockstrap under my uniform, and no pads in my pants, other than knee pads in hips and knees.  Also, I always cut my jersey off, and refused to wear my socks high.  Got to stay cool! [8D]  And fast! Besides, like you, it was my own people I had to look out for, and where the injuries came from.

So far the bike has been working this week, and I'm back on the treadmill, so maybe some of this personal flotation will start to dissapear!

We need to share a few beers at the next BRC!  I'm older than you and my stories have grown proportionate to my years out of action! Another ten years, and I'll be a really great lineman.  Hahaha..............

ROFL,  I keep getting better too!  Must be the age thing.

I have to switch to bike, I have been running for a while now to get back in shape for the bowhunt and man my knees are killing me!  I was lucky and never had any major knee damage, only one small scope my freshman year, but I don't think knees were designed to take the pounding a guy our size gives them.  Biking is a good idea.

Those eliptical trainers "chicken walkers" work alright too other than looking goofy, and they don't beat up your knees as bad.

One more absolute torture device which I was really surprised how hard it was is those dang rising seat rowing machine type things,  you know what I'm talking about, you sit on the seat and pull on the handle and push on the feet and the seat rises up, I can't remember their name.  They also look goofy but I can only handle about ten minutes on one.  Rough workout w/o the knee pain.

it's rough working out at this size w/o stressing SOMETHING.

If you are a big eater like me and are having trouble losing weight, look into Atkins,  that diet WORKS. And one thing you'll notice is that when you are restricting carbs drastically you feel *So* much better all the time.  No drowsy periods during the afternoons, better sleeping, more regular sleeping, more energy generally.

It's pretty good and it's tough to beat a diet where buffalo wings are a *Good* thing! [<]:)]

I am 5'10.5" and weigh an even 190lbs.  I have been lifting routinely for about five months to strengthen my upper body and try to restore some strength to a bum knee and foot.  The knee is good enough now to withstand 1.5mi/day at 3mph on the treadmill at 2% grade.

Last night I just started my martial training again.  Haven't been able to do it the last six months cuz of the knee, wasn't even able to maintain a fighting stance, let alone the deep stances required for stick fighting.

Now that I am feeling better, I hope to drop an inch or two from my waist and actually gain about 10 lbs.  220 is my all time heaviest, and at that time I could knock a 75lb heavy bag on a 12" chain to the rafters with a thrust side kick.  That weight had my thighs sucking up all of my oxygen during my cardio's so I had no stamina though.  I think 200 would be a good maintenance weight for me if I continue training six days a week.  I will do abs/treadmill/lifting one day, abs/dynamic stretching/martial training on opposite days.  I always take Sundays off.

BTW, I am currently 45 chest and 34 waist but the pants are all getting loose, so maybe 33.  I am just starting to get the washboard abs back.  When I was babying my knee, I never thought I would see my abs again.

I am 5'-10" and weigh 232 lbs. For me the best way to lose lbs and stay solid is to walk 5-6 days a week. I started with just my body weight walking and then I bought a weightvest from the internet site called www.weightvest.com. I purchased a 1-75 lbs, 2-50 lbs, 1-40 lbs, and 1-20 lbs. vests. When I first started I weighed 276 lbs. continued eating the same food but started walking and increasing the amount of weight I carried, and in the past 8 months have so far dropped 44 lbs. If anyone is interested in more information about this weightvests or any other information pertaining to using them, email me and I will try and answer your question as best I can

Before I had kids which cancelled my 100 mile a week biking routine I weighed 165.

No chicken legs here.  I had chicken arms.  My kids weigh 30 and 40 pounds and tossing and carrying them around has developed my upper body while my legs have atrophied slightly.  Fortunately, my mid section is about the same.  34" inch pants accept me and a 1911 in a IWB holster.

No problem, just no cartlidge!  Many injuries through the years, and thinking I'm superman!  Flairs up once in a while, and pain can be excrutiating.  I've lived with it so long that my wife can tell when it's coming on, or when I yell at myself for motivation to cross the room.  I can't repeat what I say here, but it seems to work. The most important thing you must know to avoid the big ED (erectile disfunction) is: no weight should be supported by the perineum.  Your seat must be adjusted so the weight is transferred through you pelvis bone to the seat.  This typically means the seat will be angled slightly down for guys which will also transfer a little more weight to your arms (watch out for numb hands).   Padded biking shorts also provide some protection to vital areas

FWIW women will typically want a wider saddle to avoid the wedgie effect.

Addressing the hand numbness:  Use cycling gloves with padded palms and change hand positions frequently.  I also found it helpful on my mountain bike to rotate the handle bars so instead of being swept back they actually swept down slightly.

Best wishes,
Kent

I got one of those crotchless seats for my mountain bike! :-)  I'll let you know how it goes after the holiday weekend.  Only doing about five miles in the morning, and walking the beach about three miles in evening with my wife.  She walks every morning about 5 miles, and then with the dog another couple.

I upped the water intake this week, and should be off caffeine, and cokes completely by the end of this weekend!

Winter Baseball starts in a couple of weeks and my coaching starts then.  Planning on riding to or from practices at first, and then both ways.  Practice and games run through February then Summer ball.  My team made regionals this year.  If we get better, I need to be trim for TV! [:D]

6'00,225. Should be closer to 205. Hey, thats what Gordie Howe was in his heyday!!!Thats the only thing we'd have in common....Still take a 48 long off the rack, the only difference is that now I don't have to have it altered.  My cholesterol is off the chart, but my BP and pulse are great. Go figure..Need to continue working out to lose lbs and lower cholesterol..Strong enough as is...

Do you think it was a coincidence they named that character "Pyle"?

Hey JScott, I'm the same size as you, though I've never been more than the 175 I ballooned up to when I broke a leg two years ago. Finally getting back down to race weight (a few more pounds to go), but I find I'm way slower nowadays[:(]. How'd your 10-miler go? I did 10 as well and felt decent, though I got a late start and slowed down a bit the last few miles because of the heat. Planning to run Boston? It's a great event.

Haven't been paying attention...10M run was fine. I'm doing about an 8:00 split or a little under at that distance, which isn't going to win me any laurels but that's not why I'm doing it. I'd like to do a marathon at some point, but I've got too much going on in my life right now to put the miles in. I'll do a couple of 10Ks this fall and be happy because I'm going to run PRs like nobody's business. I suspect I can go well under 50 minutes for 10K which will give me a PR by about 5 minutes.

I'm down to about 155 now. 38 inch chest, down from 44. 31 inch waist, down from 37. None of my clothes fit anymore, but I'm not complaining.

5'10", 175 lbs. 48 yrs old
Formerly weighed 208 lbs 5 yrs ago.
Diabetes diagnosed, time to change!
Walked, watched food lost 25 lbs., sugars controlled. Mountain bike nearly kills me! Get prostatitis.
Slowly gained back to 196 lbs, sugars problematic again. Lost a bit by eating less.
6 wks ago decided to get healthier, joined gym, go to gym everyday, 30 min cardio on elliptical machine or treadmill, and 2 to 3 days a week resistance training. 8 lb loss in 6 weeks.
Diet consists mainly of chicken, low fat lunchmeat, low glycemic carbs, low fat cooking, George Foreman grilled food, 5 or 6 smallish meals a day. Lots of broccoli. Protein supplement, lots of egg whites.  Low fat Salad for late evening snack, MOST IMPORTANT: absolutely NO carbs after 9pm! NO CARB SNACKS!
I am hungry every couple of hours!!
But I look so much better and feel great. I can see my arm muscles and my flank flab is melting before my very eyes. My goal is to see my abs for once.

23 years old, 5'11", 182 lbs - down from a high of 210 a year and a half ago, and 200 at the beginning of June - working my way down to 175.

I don't count calories or get too wrapped up in the "all meat / no carbs" (or the reverse) diets.  I've found the trick is to stop eating when you're not hungry anymore, instead of when you're stuffed.  Also cut out some of the really high fat stuff with zero nutritional value, like mayo, butter, excessive salad dressing, etc.  At least 10 minutes of walking a day helped quite a bit as well.

5'11" 238lbs. Seeing as one of my belts is in Judo, I like to think of it as "conserving mass."
It's time to get back to training after a two-year hiatus for marriage, moving, and child. (although I like to think the intervening handgun training gives me martial arts credit). The brand-new rowing machine arrived yesterday. Think I can get back to the 148.5lbs. of my collegiate rowing days? Maybe I'll pick 180lbs. instead!
