I'm almost a little surprised that no one has advocated welding a small VLS filled with ESSMs onto the side of a carrier for point defense.

Oh man, those decks should totally be pointing backwards AWAY from other parts of the ship.  You could accidentally sink yourself if launching in rough seas!

For those that know, do you have to lockout devices like that if you're on that walkway under it?  Just imagining the bad day if they fire off in response to something.

Or do they have to be launched by someone?

The Navy had all of the spare 16" barrels cut up so the Iowa class BB's could never be reactivated.  And the last US steel mill that could make such barrels shut down about 20 years ago.  The floating base concept is still viable, but not nearly as sexy or indestructible.

The military needs to get off the joint, combined bullshit. A carrier is a carrier, a battleship is a battleship target.

I had to take a second look to notice the jets underneath the helo pad. Ramps help for less runway. See Russian, French and English carriers for examples.

French use Cats and Traps like we do, but your other points count.

He did say VLS, technically.

And that picture is a RIM-7 Sea Sparrow, not a RIM-162 ESSM, though they can be fired out of the same launcher.

The French actually DO use a VLS, firing Aster 15's off of Charles de Gaulle.

He also said "weld it on the side".  Picture is of NSSM because that's what's on CVNs.

There's a reason why RIM-116 isn't in a VLS.

If they put some crane chains on the bottom of the rear turret barrels, that would be extra handy.

Why not have TWO Iowa class battleships built into a catamaran with a flight deck in the middle?

Would have better off without the rear turret and just make the stern half a flight deck but....

CVN with superhornets > 1000 x than BB.

Superhornet with dumb bombs > 16in shells

Superhornet with JDAMS with satellite intel and observers > 1000 x than 16in shells
