When Assad didn't win 90 days into the fight he'd already lost. Large portions of Syria are going to be a failed state for a long, long time.

The ones who want to get training and material support for their very own jihad. Otherwise, the lines are fuzzy.

My take on this fiasco is that when the US and GCC decided it was time for Assad to go,they shouldn't have just sat on the loo farting. It's all far too gone for the originally desired outcome. The VERY best that can be hoped for is all sides getting burned out and agreeing to a Lebanon in the 90s uneasy peace. Sorry for the pessimism but I don't see a military solution to IS any time soon, not from capability but rather will. The longer and longer this goes on,the higher the chance of things going to shit in the Gulf itself via Shia in Bahrain and the Saudi's home grown problems raring up and everything those encompass.

I'd buy that, 100%. Except the President, in the words of his own advisors, ducked making a decision out of fear until it was past the window of effectiveness.

Dunno man.

There are merits to helping them be effective at killing one another.  What else would they do?  They'd end up in France or Britain or Minneapolis plotting to kill Americans on American soil.

We sorta -need- a war to soak up the jihadis more local, the lazy ones will go "join the war" and with any luck, get ground the fuck up in it.

Since Obama's policy has been to pull out of area (Iraq and Afghanistan), why on earth would these rebels want to ally themselves with a USA-backed government?

ISIS will simply behead them when the American troops leave.

And the notion that there is no moderate opposition in Syria is a big part of the reason we have IS to deal with today. The revolution in Syria began as an almost entirely secular event. If we hadn't been so goddamned ignorant and short sighted about supportin' the Mooslims and them animals over thar we be quite as badly fucked as we are at the moment.

Except that is hardly accurate, it was a Sunni MB backed insurgency just like in the 80's.  I love how people here condemned the MB in Egypt but are all too willing for whatever reason to support them in Syria.  The FSA's main backing and support has always been the MB.  The main opposition in Syria going back decades has always been the MB.  They are moderate compared to ISIS sure, but they are still the MB.  Why do you think Erdogan is such a big supporter?

The article specifies two classifications for the troops.   Trainers and "enablers".  Nowhere did I see that there would be no troops, notably the so-called trainers physically in Syria.

What, they're going to shut down the battlefield for a few weeks and fly the "moderates" somewhere else for a few weeks for training?   How does that work?

Do you know what enablers are? I don't think you do.

There won't be troops in Syria. Read the damn article and do a little Google searching.

Now, that doesn't mean they won't go in at a later unspecified time, however, initially they are going there to train from surrounding countries.

The 300,000 number is a Kurdish estimate. The CIA estimate us about 30,000

Back in September they were about 31,500

There is no way in hell there are 300,000 ISIS terrorists in Syria. That is double the number of troops we had in Iraq at the height of the surge. No way.

I stood in front of what was left of that building in 2004.  It was a hell of a piece of bombing.  Big, old, pretty buildings on either side that didn't have a scratch... building in the middle, fucking gutted... blown to shit.  Scary impressive capabilities.

We were just going in to help out, be right back home.  Was 1999 I think. {media spin}  Did not last long, and no troops were hurt.{/media spin}

Sure took the news cycle away from Slick Willie, Monica etal.   Impeachment?  what was that?  poof.

But I do recall that before we started the festivities in Kosovo, we sent Jessie Jackson to negotiate.  Can we at least send Jackson or Sharpton to Kirkuk or someplace first?
