I was looking for this thread. Glad to see it popped back up.
I had TOTALLY forgot I had SETI running on one of my old machines here at work until I got one of those milestone messages from SETI@HOME on Election Day. I'll work on adding my paltry 250 WU's to TEAM AR15.com this weekend. |
Some of you need to kick your machines in gear, from the looks of the stats.
My first WU was 48 hours. Using some of the tweaks posted in this thread I'm now running about 8 hours per work unit. That's 4 times faster So, tweek away and get rolling. |
Using command line version I am currently getting 5-6 hours per WU.
My machine is a Dell Lattitude running at 1 GHZ. It doesn't take a whole lot of power to crank out those WU's! |
If I can pull my head outta my arse after getting home in the evening, I'll add a few thousand more (3-5K, I forget exactly) completed WU's to the team. That is, IF I can log into their site.
I've been running the command line version for exactly one-long-time with a home-grown NT service that will run up to N (you decide) in hidden windows. You can have as many cached units as you want, too. It sounds a lot like some of the other tools mentioned. The source is long gone due to job changes. And, as long as they don't change the file extension on version changes AGAIN, I won't have to hack the binary in a text editor AGAIN. BTW: can you guess where my name came from? I was once accused of being the first organic computer virus because I was installing it on a lot of systems at the office. Admin privileges sure can be nice. Lager, -sgt_seti |

Just joined. "skyexpansive". added 465 units. Two computers running CLI version. (g4, dual P3)

Call me stupid, but I can't figure out which command line version I could run under Windows XP. I've got a P4 1.7mhz and wouldn't mind crank'in it up some. |
It is something like i386_winnt_cmdline.exe.
Just make sure it had winnt and i386 in the name. Bob |
Fight, glad you're times are more inline now... here's the CLI for WinXP...
ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe Glad to see all the new members, we've grown in the last few weeks and are doin' some serious crunchin'... GlockTalk is currently at 29704 WU's, with Team AR15.Com at 25134 WU's! The gap is closing fast... Team AR15.Com: setiathome.berkeley.edu/fcgi-bin/fcgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=ar15%2Ecom Team GlockTalk: setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_145414.html |

Could we get a tack on this thread? Sure make it easier to find...
Darkstar,
You could subscribe to it like I did. Then you get an email when people post. Bob |
Ok..I joined along with 417 work units to be added to the AR15 Tally..
I am running the Command line version, it is significantly faster. |
OK, OK. I got my head outta my arse. My 4418 WU have been added. That should give us a good, solid lead over TrashTalk. The team tally will have to be updated before it's obvious.
FYI: I have a dual processor P233MMX running 2 simultaneous at a mighty long time per WU at home. The office machine cranks them out in about 7 hours. Lager, sgt_seti |
Welcome to the club. Even if you did knock my ass down to 4th place. Thats ok, I am churning out over 35 units a day.
Bob |
cool, thanks for the assist!
we now top those 'glocktalk' types 30109:29704 however, that bumps me back to 3rd place |
So what exactly are we supposed to do with his? I downloaded it but am completely without a clue. Do I have to fire it up everytime I start my machine - or does it start up automatically? |
What operating system are you running? Where did you store the file?
I put the file in it's own directory and created a shortcut to my "Startup" directory. This way it runs every time I reboot. When it starts up for the first time choose 2, and enter your email address associated with your seti account. Bob |
That almost sounds like a challenge. But, I am not going to take the bait. If I ever decide that I don't care about being employed (at least, where I am), I'll put it on those four MULTI CPU (not sure, think 4 each) RS6000's that we have running at my current employer. Lager, sgt_seti |
Apparently I'm a moron. ... okay I think I've got it - maybe I'll come back and whine some more tomorrow if I still can't figure it out. |
Ok..I am going to run it continously overnight.
Maybe..we can overtake Glock Talk if we can add some more members and have them download and run the command line version of the SETI program. |
There, now I have all three of my machines chugging away. This puts quite a load on the processor. Took my CPU temp up 10 degrees when it runs.
The WU's are using a great deal of your processor and system bus and the temps will go up... If you can, take a peak inside your machine and check for fur-bunnies blocking the processor heatsink/fan and the intake and outlet areas of the powersupply. I cleaned one at work the other day that looked like it had a dead raccoon in it. Machine kept overheating... running perfectly now. |
Anybody gone over to GlockTalk and gloated yet? Public humiliation seems to be in order...
Sent paypal for membership last night and am working on downloading the SW for the SETI stuff this AM have a few leftover computers and the server from the office we shut down that no-one is using or looking for right now it may take me awhile to get it setup though we just moved to PA and everything is in storage or still packed up for now. Id install it on my wifes machine but her co dosent allow any SW to be installed other than how it comes from IT.

For some reason, the comandline version doesn't seem to be doing any better for me. Of course, i'm a dually P3, so i can run 2 untis at the same time. So im doing twice the work, but it still will shouw that it's taking 11 hrs each. poopy.

You know..... i don't think memory is an issue here. I have 896 mB PC-133 SDRAM. This this is like a turbo diesel; Not very fast, but it's got some power. dual P3 667's. I'm running the command line version with SETI driver. I'm going to sit back and watch a bit. MY prior average was 12 hrs. Setidriver is estimating 11hrs, 52 minutes.
Something isn't right... EDIT: Just a thought....i have Seti Driver running 2 processes. Anyone know much about driver? It is telling me 11 hrs, 52 minutes. Is that the time for BOTH processes? I mean, will it show up with 2 units@11 hrs, or 2 [email protected] hrs? |
SETI Driver is not very good about estimated times... SETI Spy has the ability to configure for the specific processor you're running, making it much more accurate. SETI Driver is monitoring one of the 2 processes, the other is running in the background. Think of your WU times like running 2 computers. Each WU will end up 10 or 11 hours, you're doing 2 during that time period, so your actual computer time will be 20 or 22 hours, combined. Check out your CAS settings on your RAM. The difference between CAS 2 and CAS 3 is over an hour on my duals. My dual PIII 1GHz system has 256MB of CAS 2 Crucial SDRAM, 4-way memory interleaving enabled, and takes approximately 8 hours 40 minutes per WU. Duals will take longer clock for clock compared to a system using the same processor on a single MB. This is due to the shared bus system. A dual has lots of horsepower, but sharing the 133Mhz bus is the bottleneck. The fastest systems are singles running 166 and higher FSB. SETI loves L2 cache and FSB... Coppermine processors have a 256k L2 so they spend alot of time on the bus with data moving back and forth. A 512k and higher cache lets SETI stay 'on the processor', making it mucho faster. The 600Mhz Katmai with 512k cache is an amazing SETI cruncher. If you want the 'best', you're talking Xeon's with hyperthreading. Major league bux... |
My Seti Spy App is stating that my processer is averaging about 24.61 percent per hour.
Kick ass times... |
I dunno what this guy's got in his box but it is pretty damn fast..
Check out his average Work Unit Times 140) JerryFel 116802 6.216 years 0 hr 27 min 58.1 sec |

Darkstar,
I almost went with dually katmai's. I can't remember why i didn't.... probably cost. I had one i sold on Ebay for over $100 used!!! Those suckers do perform though. I'll have to check hwen i get home.. i tinhk i forgot to install the memory interleaving last time i reformatted. That might help. As for overclocking...I can up it a bit, but my video card gets funny. I'm running a Voodoo 5 5500. That thing is monster, but works great for it's age. |
Count me in. I find myself hypnotic trance watching this thing run...
Berkely sucks, but this looks fun, so I am in. That would really piss off the faculty to see two firearms groups. Hope they don't go the way of DU and "ban" us...
just a quick note to say kudos to Darkstar for his contribution of helping others (myself included) in pumping out more wu's!
Hey which one of you low-life scumbags knocked me into 8th place? (Just kidding, way to go!)
I've got one cpu running about 5 wu/day, and another one doing just about 1 wu/day. I'll try to get a few more running, but I'm gonna max out around 9 to 10 wu/day. |
Wooohoooo I have the lowest "Average CPU time
per work unit". 3 hr 33 min 14.7 sec !!! |
Schapman43, that's fantastic!
I'm doing about 4.25 hours a WU now with a P4 2.5GHz. Of course, there is some variability from WU to WU. But it is a big improvement from my first WU 3 years ago on a PII 200Mhz box. It took about 90 hours/WU. Hence, even at 1200 WU, my average is about 23 hr/US. What are you running? {Edited to fix my bad spelling} |
Great times... what are your system specs? Commandline or the screensaver? |
DarkStar,
I'm gonna OWN you in about ten days! Better go out and buy some more CPUs while you still are in 5th place. |
My intake fans have filters so no dust bunnies. The increase in temperature is no big deal. I think it was somewhere around 117 but cooled down when I speed up the fans. If anyone is in the market for a heatsink check out www.vantecusa.com/afc250.html |

I have a the following AMD Athlon XP 2000 Asus A7V8X Mainboard 512 Corsair PC2700 DDR 333mhz memory Western Digital 120gb 8mb cache HD Those are the main components that would effect performance. You can see some pics of it here. www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4291254713 I just installed cold cathodes along with a fanbus today. |
