My cousin tried 3 times. Twice with pills and once with a 45. Point blank in the crest with a 45. Poor shot placement is the only reason that he is still here. Not the same, but still here.
His daughter found him every time. Talk about devastated. |

An old girlfriend I had took me to meet her grandfather once. On the way there she was warning me that he was blind and that he would hold out his hand and I should shake it and stuff like that. I asked how he became blind and she just blurted out that he shot himself in the head but failed to finish the job. The story goes that he had a business that was failing and he had tons of debt pile up so he wrote a suicide note and put a pistol to his temple. The bullet went across the front of his face and took out both eyeballs but didn't do any other damage. He lived out the rest of his life with all of the problems he had before but now he was blind on top of it....

I used to shoot matches there in the 90's. People were offing themselves in that place back then. Counter guy told a story about a dude coming in and rents a .38, buys a box of fifty rounds. Goes out on the range and starts shooting. He is the only one out there. Counter guy gets busy then realizes he hasn't heard any shooting for a minute. Looks out on the range. No guy. Knew right then what he was going to find when he opened the door. What cracked me up was as he finished the story he said "But it goes to show our reloads work" Had some good times at those matches. Those have been known to double (it's really fucking fast, too), with round #2 going through the melon due to the position of the gun after round #1 recoil. It is possible that it was an accident, not knowing any backstory or particulars. How can a revolver double? The big DA revolvers recoil so much that the mechanics of the hand and gun cause them to double extremely quickly. Like quicker than some machine guns. There's video of it on youtube. |

What actually happened there? Where did the instructor get hit? Why didn't he grab the gun while it was on the floor? Looked like he was going to, then changed his mind. Run and Hide! It's interesting how people react to life threatening situations. If there was ever a time to go hand to hand, that would be it. View Quote Think the instructor did what 99.9% of any of us would have done. I imagine his mind was analyzing millions of scenarios in that instant. Looks like he instinctively reached for the gun, but then drew back. I bet in that instant he realized if she wanted him dead, he'd be dead. He realized she was suicidal, incoherent and didn't even know he was there. If he interfered with her she may have likely freaked and finished him off. He wasn't in an advantageous position gimping on the ground like that. I know arfcom envisions themselves being heroes in these kind of situations but being invisible is often your best chance of survival. |

I work in a range, and this is why we don't rent guns to those who come in alone. At one time we had someone who wanted to "try out" a specific model before buying it. Well I wasn't busy and had no classes so I took him in to "give him some pointers" that's my polite way of saying I don't trust you. On the second magazine I watched the gun come up in the direction of his head, at this point I wanted that gun in my hand and him on the floor! We went through the bench with me holding his gun hand and all 200 pounds of me slamming him to the concrete.
Turns out he had just had an altercation with the wife, in either case he didn't need a gun. It got real interesting when is lawyer called, seems he got a bit busted up when we hit. He also got a 3 day supervised say at one of our fine mental health facilities. And was banned for life from our establishment. I really had to give props to a couple of our range members for helping out, now I know what it feels like being on the bottom of a dog pile! And the gun needed to go in for refinishing, they didn't have to kick it down to the 50' line |

How can a revolver double? View Quote yes and no, the revolver cant, the shooter can make it. "squeeze... BOOOM" recoil, trigger resets as elbows buckle and gun points upward toward chin, fingers grip HARD on the moving thing, and BOOM SPLAT. kinda like how a bump fire works, it isn't actually auto fire, it is your body simply being slower than recoil. |
|
I can't find the video now, but there's one I watched last week where a guy is simulating Russian Roulette with a watermelon and a .500 S&W. In the slow motion, you can see the gun recoil so hard that the barrel goes to his head several times, even under his chin. If he realized it, I bet he's really thankful he only loaded 1 round at a time.

Had an assistant track coach at my High School attempt suicide with a shotgun in the mouth. People who do this sometimes don't properly brace the butt of the shotgun and the recoil can make the gun move enough to just blow off half your face. When the head coach wanted the tracksters to wear a black arm band in support of the POS I thought the school and team were going to mutiny. View Quote Yeah, I have seen this. A drunken wife and kid abuser was threatening his family with a shotgun. They all but one ran out of the house with dad in pursuit and the one remaining locked the door they had gone out of. They ran around the house and into the other door where it was promptly slammed shut and locked. Sounded to me like this was a fairly regular drill at the house. They would not let him back in, or rather him and his shotgun, so he went and sat down under a tree in front yard, put the gun in his mouth, and pulled the trigger. Just shot off one side of his face up through the cheekbone, most of his teeth and tongue, it was a real fucking mess. We shipped him out to a bigger hospital. It must have been interesting when he sobered up and realized what he had done. The wife had come to the emergency room, and I think she was done with him at that point, the final straw being him drunkenly chasing her and the kids with a shotgun and threatening to kill everyone. She was so pissed at him. |

His daughter found him every time. Talk about devastated. View Quote I have responded to and/or investigated many suicides over my 25 years in LE. Only 1 has bothered me, which was my youngest daughter's best friend. A very nice, brilliant 17 year old young man who got a free ride to OSU to study physics. He was despondent after being rejected by a girl in their grade. He drank a few beers, then put Dad's 1911 in his mouth. Dad was sleeping two rooms down the hall and didn't hear the shot. When Dad got up at 5:30am he saw the gun cabinet opened in the living room, thought there had been a burglary and immediately checked on his son whom he found dead in bed. Dad was grief-stricken to a degree I had never seen. I knew the boy, though not well, and didn't know where he lived. I didn't recognize him because he wasn't wearing his glasses, coupled with the expression of surprise and horror on his face. It was evident that he wasn't killed immediately and suffered for some time before he died. I realized who he was when I read his name on certificates of achievement hanging on his walls, plus he had a dry-erase board with a bunch of physics stuff on it, just like Sheldon Cooper in "Big Bang Theory". When I came home I told my daughter and she did not react well. I've delivered many death notifications over the years, but never considered delivering such to a family member that was "work-related". |

Former employee of mine's husband attempted to murder her with the 12 ga. He missed as she ran thorough the living room. He stuck the barrel in his mouth and promptly blew his face off. No death, just no face. She called 911 and applied aid until the ambulance got there. She called me just after the paramedics came in the room. Talk about being at a loss for words. I would have let the bastard bleed to death or gave him some help to finish.
Nice girl, she seems to be doing ok now. Only took 4 years of therapy and medication. |

A very good friend of ours had his son attempt suicide, shot himself through the mouth and didn't succeed....and there was very little damage afterwards. Other than normal psych issues, he's physically fine.

I shoot revolvers more than anything, but as much as I hate to say it, the mix of hot load in a S&W 19-3, the slippery hard plastic 80's pachmayr grips, and me not being used to a crazy light trigger, I doubled with a .357. Never had it happen with any of my Rugers, but they all have had hogue grips. Tell you what though, that 19-3 had an amazing trigger after the thousands and thousands of rounds my former MIL put through it. I have responded to some crazy ones and a few times located a few while searching for missing persons. There are more than a few running around that have survived attempts and I always wonder what they must be thinking after they go through with it and the oh shit starts sinking in. I have found a couple that I have spent two or three days looking for, always in thick ass palmettos, always at night, and i am usually all by myself with them for some time until other units can find me and get into the scene. some people do it in places where i guess they think they wont be ever found, it turns into another 6 or 8 hours getting the body out. I always think about the families who are waiting for days hoping we will just come walking out with their loved one. After finding the mess that they do to themselves I could never do the notifications. |

My Uncle did the shotgun thing back in 78. My aunt got a big settlement from the hospital for letting him out with all the psych issues he had. Shame my 3 cousins all ended up dead or in Federal prison before they were 40.
My mother used a Rossi 38 to the back of her head in 82. Worst part of that was telling her folks/my grandparents another child had committed suicide. On top of that the cleanup wasn't much fun either and left quite an impression. One month later I was in USMC basic and that brought me back to reality. I was 18 in 82. Fuck suicide. |
