Number 1 reason.

Give us Japanese laws, or those from Germany, China, whatever.  Crime stats would not budge.  People will do what they will do, whether it is legal or not.

When I was stationed in the Philippines, (85 - 89), at least once a month, someone got busted at the Manila airport going to Japan with guns. If you believe that that one person was the only one that month....I have a bridge for sale.

I spent 6 months living in Japan.

When I went there I was initially told I don't need to worry about theft, pickpockets, or mugging. . . I was told that in any of the major cities I could go anywhere I please anytime I please and they were right!

Japan is an awesome place with a remarkably low rate of crime.

This relates back to how well they as a society deal with natural disasters (no looting, rape, or violent gangs roaming the street)

There is a lot to be admired about the Japanese people, it's too bad any sort of model based upon the Japanese would fail here in a heartbeat.

Just my .02

But their criminal justice system is not one of them.

Because we do not force confessions, beat our prisoners and make them live in inhumane conditions, or give the police the unlimited ability to search and seize our possessions.
The japanese have the worst criminal justice system of any first world nation. habeus corpus what does that mean?

Man, that system sounds about as bad as the military dictatorship it replaced.

Fuck that. If that's what liberals are advocating here, then they do even more discredit to the term "liberal" than they have done for the last 90 years.

Lol, that's why I lived there for 20 years and will someday return.

Japan as a whole has a lot less laws.., go figure.

Friends wife's mothe get pissed at the wife, takes kids somewhere, wife calls the police. The police say its your mom and a family
problem. Stop wasting our time. Hahaha

You consider that a good thing?

If my Mom were to kidnap my kids because she "got pissed" at my wife; well, I love my Mom, but I'd expect the cops to do anything up to and including shooting her to get them back.  Thanks for reinforcing my desire to never live there.

It's a great thing!! She took the kids to the mall, far cry from kidnapping. I believe that we the people over use the police for civil matters.
Shooting? Seriously? Wow, good don't visit, people like you won't make it out.

As stated above, reporting of the crime is way under taken. It is seen as an embarrassment to society to actually have to take someone to jail, so often, and an the spot ass whooping is delivered, and nothing else is said.

It also says above that Japan is multi-cultural.

I hope to God I don't see the day that our society decides that freedom isn't worth the hassle.

There may not be a lot of gun crime, but crime itself is out of control, but way underreported in Japan. Unless you happen to be a Marine stationed there. Then, if you sneeze, they will arrest and try you for biological warfare.

Also, we had a guy get arrested and sent to Naja City jail. That place was no joke. Make a sound in there, and they will beat your ass. Get out of line? Ass beating. Not follow a command? Ass beating. On top of the ass beating, they feed you a subsistence level diet. Just enough to keep you alive and in a perpetual state of hunger. Our guy said " Well, my life of crime was short lived. I'm never again doing anything to get me treated like that ever again.".

The out of control crime is mainly caused by marines and other active duty military. I'm glad they played hardball with the marines, Okinawa is a nice place and these dumb shits trash everything and rape the women.  I wish the would hang them at the gates.

If we treated prisoners harsh, repeat offenders would be minimized.

They do have more section 8 than here, but the people who live in government subsidized housing are actually appreciative of it and maintain it well. Think WW2, All the real worriers were killed by the US military or committed Hari-Kari, only men left were the Pussies!

There are plenty of illegals in Japan.  I'm not sure where you're talking about, but I could walk out the front gate of the base and probably round up a hundred or so in a matter of a few minutes.  JPS routinely arrests them, but they're still around.

...sort of like our founders did.

Some state power is necessary...but don't trust it too much, because the state is run by human beings. Human beings who will frequently be bastards when given power and no accountability for the exercise of it.

People have this bizarre notion that Japan is a nice quiet place full of nice people...forgetting that the Japanese made the Nazis look like choir boys, that they've never repented for their sins, and that they still hang on to all that racist shit they've had since at least the 1600's.

I do not care how cushy a prison is, I have yet to meet someone who wanted to be there and I worked in one. I did not even like spending 8-12 hours a day in there knowing I could go home at the end of my shift.

You can't claim to support the constitution and condone cruel and unusual punishment. Beating prisoners, making them live in unsanitary and inhumane conditions is not what a civilized society does.

Not sure what it is about asian societies but they sure do love to dish out cruel punishment.

I lived in Japan 3 years. Two as a child (Navy dependent) and 1 year stationed there as a US Marine.

When I was a kid we lived out in town while waiting for base housing. My friend another Navy brat and I had ridden our bicycles to the beach for a fun day of throwing trash and driftwood in the surf. When we rode back to Levi's house the Japanese police were there waiting for us. We were about 11 years old. Detained and held till my father and Levi's father could be brought in with Shore Patrol from the Navy base.

Our serious crime? A old Japanese woman called the Japanese police to report that two American boys had thrown mud balls at her house. Which we did not. Fortunately we were not IDed as the perps by the old woman, case closed as far as I was concerned.

My point is that the Japanese culture is very subservient and respectful of all authority. Shame is still a critical componet in their homogenious society. In the US we hold personal freedom in the highest regard. That is not so in other countries.

The Japanese police are not restrained and will not hesitate to beat the tar our of drunken Marines out in town who are acting up.
