Smith & Wesson is one of the few companies that has seen a lot of growth and profits, and that's because of the M&P line.

Why would they do this?

This is retarded.

The letter states the parties are unlawfully modifying S&W products.

Does Apex, Brownells, etc sell new firearms with aftermarket parts....

Is Apex, Brownells, etc even an O7 FFL (manufacturer?)

Apex triggers and Brownells branded parts are not even S&W products

Just tweeted my thoughts about it to S&W.  I suggest everyone do the same or similar.

Everyone of my M&P's has an Apex kit in it, and if I can't buy Apex for S&W M&P's, guess what else I won't be buying.

I'd rather have smith modify my trigger to my liking than apex parts...  It's covered by smith, for life, no matter what and no hassle.

[speculation]

Didn't S&W just recently introduce the Performance Center Shield, which is supposed to have a better trigger?

Maybe they want to sell the enhanced M&P triggers separately and get some of that $$$ Apex is making?

So the hillary boycott is coming back.  I have also heard of accuracy issues with M and P barrels .

Let's try calling it Smith and Wesson perfection.

If the factory trigger for M&P's didn't suck, there wouldn't be nearly as much demand for the Apex kits.

I'm an IP lawyer and I'd be very interested to see the rest of the letter to see what their argument is for calling the modifications "unlawful."  I'd also be interested to see their trademark argument since advertising parts and repair services for a particular product are generally allowable.  It is certainly possible that one or more of the targets of the letter did something to justify a complaint, but it would be unusual for all of them to have done the same thing.

I wonder if they used S&W logos to sell products from other makers. I'd also like to know what were the "unlawful modifications." Since the letter was intentionally cut off before it explained the issues, I'll bet that Smith had a legitimate complaint.

That doesn't explain how the Glock has more aftermarket parts available than all the S&W handguns.

I thought Glock was perfection? Why the need for so many aftermarket parts if they were perfect?

Maybe because Glock is hugely popular and some people like to alter their firearms even if its not necessary? At least Glock doesn't tell aftermarket manufacturers to stop making parts.

a glock out the box is perfectly fine, but hey, sometimes people want to enhance certain aspects of the gun..

the point is glock aren't being fags about people wanting to modify they guns they own while S&W is throwing a hissy fit over it.

So it looks like the main issue is that they are modifying the guns while leaving the Smith & Wesson logos on them. I understand why they would have a problem with it. The assertion that it creates safety and quality issues is kind of ridiculous. I'll base my judgement on what Smith asks them to do from here on.

ETA: Re read the end of the letter, are they asking them to stop all of their services and products?

Here is the problem, what happens when they get sued their party for a faulty pistol that ended up hurting someone? What about warranty? I know that a modified pistol loses its warranty, but does S&W end up having to deal with endless crap when things break?

This whole thing is basically based on don't completely change out the internals, alter the frame and slide, change the barrel, etc and then sell it as our pistol.

What is next? Ford sending tire shops letters to stop putting wheels and tires on F250's?

lol

Good luck with that.

GM pretty much told us changing our own oil will void the warranty

Friend of mine was denied warranty on his new Silverado's differentials because he put in a cold air intake.

He should have shoved Magnusson Moss up their asses.

I'll wait for more info to surface about this S&W bidness.

Exactly.

If this is actually the intent of the letter, I have zero problem with S&W protecting their brand/IP.

The plot thickens..... S&W "M&P Dream Gun" offered with altered parts and still exhibiting the S&W and M&P trade marks...

They are selling a new pistol that they alter as a smith....... This actually probably is a direct violation of US trademark/patent law and Smith isn't really saying much about personally owned weapons modified after it seems. Or maybe this is only part of their grievance.

So you can modify and resell to your heart's content, but you can't leave the logo intact? I could see if the slide was aftermarket and they added the logo...

So if a aftermarket performance car places buys a mustang and modifies it, they also need to pull off the hood ornament?

If they're trying to sell it as new without factory authorization, yes.

Perfect examples would be Ruf, Alpina, Brabus...

so should they sue boresight solutions? salient arms? ATI? zev? (or it think zev only does glocks)

again, unless there's a clause when buying an m&p that says you cannot resell this after purchase, i think the cease and desist letter is bullshit..

also lol @ S&W geting blasted on their instagram page
