Damn.

My boss and his sons are going to Philmont next week.

Prayers out to the family, troop and Philmont staff.

I went on several treks in the late 80's though mid-90s.  I'd go back today if I could.  Beautiful place.

My last trek was 1995 to celebrate my Eagle award.

Did the 100+ itinerary that included Mt. Baldy, right around 2000.

The counselors I met ranged from brilliant and awesome to criminally negligent.  We had to report some at one camp - I want to say it was one of the old gold mine camps? - for completely unacceptable behavior and fabricating reports that we improperly handled garbage and provoked bears.

We sent pound cake and canned cherries back with a supply car to a different camp with some really great counselors.  

It's a beautiful region but it is still very wild, and I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Never made it to Philmont. Hope to at some point as a leader.

That sucks. Hopefully nothing changes.
