Turn on comp.
Whan first screen (bios ?) comes up hit F10, then hit F10 agin.
Systom should return to original condition at purchase. Anything that was not there at that time will be removed (both files and software).

Seriously? It's all deleted?

Um, no.

Was told about this by comp tech at Fryes.
Used it on a comp I was giving to a friend (yes to hide the porn ) and it worked as far as I could see.
All files photos and added programs were gone.

Not unless it rewrites every bit to 0.

This, they throw away merchandise, basically. when new models come out or after a store update and remodel is the best time to look. I've got a small lcd tv and some crappy black and decker cordless drill/saw thing from behind wal-mart, the dumpster was loaded with the same model tv and drill, and other furniture i didn't feel like carrying.

Yep, back when I was younger my first job was at a retail store. They made us break the merchandise before we tossed it. Pretty fun for a young buck.

Putting something in a Dumpster has been defined as Abandonment.

I don't want it.  Here, take it.

It's the same thing as putting your garbage near the curb on Garbage Day(s)

When I toss out a old computer I trash the hard drive separately. I render it inoperable via hammer and fire.

I once worked for a certian big box electronics retailer when in high school. They would toss out new VCRs, TVs, stereos, etc as they came off the truck if the boxes were severely damaged. They would not even bother to open them and see if the merchandise was damaged first. You better bet I dumpster dive at those places. I have salvaged many perfectly good electronics from them.

All the information (files, programs, etc) are still there.  Think of the index in a book, just because you alter the index - doesn't mean the content isn't still there.
Computer fail.

PS - never trust the Mall Ninjas at Fryes.

I cleaned the computer up a little bit and I'm posting from it right now.

The speakers are a bit of a mystery to me.  It's Eastern brand and I've got a woofer unit with two small satellite speakers.  Even at max volume, the sound level is barely over conversational.  Both speakers hiss on max volume, one not bad and another somewhat loud.  I tried swapping the satellites with a set of known good speakers and the result is the same, the hiss is gone but the volume is the same.  Any ideas?  I've got a set of speakers so if the ones I got were shit, no big deal, but it would be nice to have a fat woofer.

no, it doesn't clean the system.  it may wipe the FAT but probably not. it might set your BIOS back to original settings though.

if you get a hard drive that you want data off of, you need to download a free wipe utility.  Some people look for DoD compliant wipe tools but I don't think it matters.

what matters is overwriting every bit multiple times.  if you suspect there is child porn on there (doesn't sound like there is, sounds like someone who was getting a new computer and didn't want to mess with getting rid of the old one) and want it wiped clean,  do a 7x overwrite with your wife utility and you should be good.

About the speaker thing in my last post, I put the good speaker set in that I already had and they still are quiet too.  I adjusted the volume to max for the computer in the Control Panel and I know that the speakers are good because they'll shake the windows but now they can only get to conversational level.  It's not a huge deal, but it's nice to have 11 available if I need it.  Any ideas on how to get the sound level back?

This.  Depending on the company, most have the option to do a "Restore".... it will be like the day it was first taken out of the box and plugged in.

Restart and hit all the "F" keys till you find the magical one.

for the reinstall/formatting.  NSA once said that three complete write overs was up to securing sensitive documents.  I can't remember the names of the programs, but there were a couple that would write 1/0 over the entire hard drive just for the permanent deletion.

I have a piece of software I bought because of hard drive crashes that would pull NTFS and FAT32 journals/tables from 3 regular formats and I could almost always recover data after a format as long as the drive is still blank.  So formatting is completely secure.  I would pick up a new drive and copy of XP, you can get 1/2 terabyte drives for under $150 now.

my dad has bought some R title cars from the insurance company to fix up and drive around his farm and he has found slot of stuff like that. the one time he even found a 200 and some piece craftsman tool set in the trunk that wasn't even opened. some people are just really dumb

I bought a used car from a dealer about year ago. While cleaning out the glove box, I found the previous owners application for financing said car, mortgage papers, bank account #s, and a host of other personal stuff. Evidently it was his file cabinet as well as car. He only had the car for a couple years and I think it may have been a voluntary repo.

He's damn lucky someone shady didn't buy the car, or even steal it when he still owned it. I shredded everything for him.

So yes, people are that stupid.

Beats me. I'd reinstall and update the driver and if that doesn't work, try a new sound card.

One of my favorite dumpsters to dive is the Recycling ones.  Specifically the Paper ones..  Books, magazines, porn, anything you can Imagine.... often quite new.  My local Sears store two blocks away has provided me with a Dremel tool, the collet lock doesn't work right, but the wrench in the box works it perfect.....

Dive, Dive, Dive!!!!  It's free, it's recycling, it gets you ahead, and fuck the naysayers...

I did an update on the sound driver and now the speakers and woofer both work and I gotta say, you'll damn near blow out the windows.  Just taking them off 0 is almost uncomfortable, but when you go to 11, you can feel your hair getting blown back, especially since I got the woofer at face level.  This is the best dumpster find EVAR!
