I'm curious how many people that LOVE the Mexican/Cane Sugar coke can pick it out in a blind taste test.
Because I'm an anal-retentive nerd, I decided to do a blind test, because I can get Mexican/Cane coke around here all day long, and I THOUGHT it tasted better, but then I wondered how much of that was just psychological (various explanations), so I decided to test it.
I was also curious because my sister-in-law claims that soda goes bad if it sits more than 6 months or so in aluminum cans, and I had a six-pack of Coke that had been in my garage for almost 3 years - freezing in the winter, 100+ degrees in the summer. The sixpack also spent a week in a moving truck in July, so those were probably 120+ temperatures.
We also bought some Whole Foods store brand Cola, because it's also made with cane sugar.
Here's what's interesting. The Coke that tasted the "best" was the regular U.S.-made Coke with the damn HFCS
- the two that I had trouble telling apart were the Mexican cane sugar coke and the regular U.S. HFCS coke that sat in my garage for almost three years.
I definitely COULD NOT pick out the Mexican cane sugar coke from among the unmarked glasses (my wife put adhesive stickers on the bottoms of the glasses for my test, and I did the same for her test), and the one I liked the best was NOT the Mexican coke.
We repated the test, and the second time again, the results were the same. I could not pick out the Mexican one, and my favorite was not it.
So I learned that while I BELIEVED that I liked the Mexican sugar Coke the best, it wasn't in fact true!
