Hi OP:  I also live in VA & carry a 9mm here.

- Stick with the 9mm; there are plenty of suitable defense loads with light recoil; most of the 147gr loadings are mild, yet effective defensively.

-SA/DA is tough.  Can you convince her to try a striker-fired gun like the Glock 19 or S&W M&P compact?  Either would be a better carry gun for stressful defensive situations (IMHO).

-if not, the CZs are excellent, but make sure you get a model with an alloy or polymer frame, as the steel models are quite heavy and are not compfortable for everyday carry (ask me how I know).  The P-01 is a fine choice & has a proven record as the police sidearm of the Czech police.

Has she shot a Beretta PX4 subcompact in 9mm (Type F or Type G - type D is DAO)?

Seems to fit her needs quite well, I really like those little guns. Ended up selling mine as I carry the PM9 whenever a full size doesn't work, but it was a great pistol.

No, but I like what I've read. Any issues feeding defense ammo?
Sold quite a few aside from some teething issues with the first few batches of the full size guns

I have not fielded any complaints

I carry a Glock 19 and she has fired it many times, but she says she just is not comfortable carrying something without a manual safety. Thanks for the insight on the frame issue.

True. They should seek out quality training in CCW and get a good understanding of safety's.

Have her shoot a G26. Then see if she still has the manual saftey requirement.

Just what you need to do, give a petite woman a very small handgun with no grip....

She might try a Smith & Wesson 6906. It's fairly compact, alloy frame, decocker/safety. And it holds 12 rounds, plus one in the chamber.

Browning high power.

Not very big, and the last 5' tall 90 pound hot chick who shot it (first time ever shooting) looked like she'd been shooting her whole life after she was 5 rounds in.

Bersa 380 is one good choice, Bersa 9mm ultra compact another.  The 9UC is an accurate and reliable 9mm, not tiny but as small as you can probably make a 9 and have it be comfortable to shoot.  This is a very under rated little gun and you will be surprised with it.

I recommend she carry her butt to the house and make a dang sandwich .heheh

Seriously if she is like my wife she will never clean a gun and wanst to be100% sure it will go bang ever time . This means a J frame Smith and Wesson like the model 36  in a pretty nickle finish . You can load 38 spl as light or 38 +P as heavy as you can stand . It will always go bang even if it's left in a purse full of makeup for a year and never cleaned . My wife is 4ft 8 in and 140 lbs and she loves hers . No semi auto can survive a year in a woman's purse and still be 100% reliable .

Probably the best carry gun Smith ever made.  They can be very hard to find.  If you stumble across one at a show, buy it.  It probably won't be there when you get back.

Plenty of us understand passive safeties, and still prefer a manual safety.

CZ75 Compact or P-01 are excellent pistols but they are not thin at all.

Maybe a Walther PPS?

WINNER!

(there are several similar variants like the 908 that are basically the same as well)

And the double stack 6906

So many of the guns suggested have their safeties in the wrong place...

I don't thing a woman with small hands would have an easy time reaching a slide-mounted safety.

If she likes the Walther, have her try a PPS in 9MM.  I love mine.  I carry it in a Galco ankle holster.  Forget it's there after a few minutes.
