cut a hole in a piece of paper just enough to see one square, then compare it to the other. Don't look at the surrounding squares.

Just get a piece of heavy paper, cut two holes so you can look at only A & B at the same time. You'll see.

Take your two pointer fingers, and cover up the squares to both sides of the strip, so all you see is the strip and the two squares.

It's really simple. If you have a medium gray, and surround it with dark gray, it looks lighter than it is. Same with vice versa. So when you do both, you get a compounded effect.

Exactly, the A in the A square is surrounded by a darker gray the the B in the B square. Thats why it looks brighter.

Foolproof way to know if A and B are the same shade without relying on something that is easily tricked by a few shades.

1)Right-click on Jaxson's first image.
2)Click copy image
3)Open MSPaint
4)Paste the image into Paint
5)Use the dropper tool to get the color of square A
6)Figure out the RGB value
7)Repeat 5&6 for square B

Hint: They're both 120-120-120 with 160 Hue, 0 Sat and 113 Lum.

I have to agree.
1) If they are the same shade you wouldn't see a checkerboard pattern at all
2) Since when does moving a dark color into the shade make it lighter?

You mean from the area not being illuminated by the lamp into an area that is?

In other news, when you turn the lights off in a room without windows everything changes colors to black.
