I'd imagine this to be at least close to the truth, if not him in person. |

Ok, if he said it then it must be true, thanks. |

remote input output is a proposed part of OBD III
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Board_Diagnostics#Future_developments An OBD-III specification is in the regulatory development phase.[citation needed] Information on the content of this specification is limited. Some[attribution needed] have speculated that OBD-III will include the capability for a vehicle to report emissions violations automatically using some sort of radio transmitter. |

Emergency. That definition is extremely subjective and open to big time abuse. He has guns. It's an emergency. He is smoking. Another emergency. He has guns, is smoking, has his kid in the car and is talking on his cellphone. Call SWAT, I'm shutting down the car now. Now, if I was the only one that could call onstar and tell them to shut down the car, I'd feel better about it. |
They are working on a way to manipulate your usage via an interactive meter syatem that they can control.. |
Everyone want time of use charging. That way, they won't have to build more power plants and piss off the lefties. If it costs $.16 a kw to wash your clothes at 5 pm when it is 100 degrees, you might wait until 9 pm when it is only $.10 a kw TXL |

neither am i safety and security for liberty and all that good stuff our current society and my generation in particular has been given a big steaming pile of shit for a gov, and for some reason most people just keep shoveling it down without a second thought. |
+1, and things like that add weight, which decreases fuel economy and makes for less ammo money! |
I guess that makes my decision between the 09 Challenger and Camaro an easy choice..
Shame too, I was liking the Camaro better |
Oh, the big wig said the things I want to hear in order to help his sales. I feel so much better. |
Just because THEY don't doesn't mean some 14 year old punk isn't going to. No thanks - the only method I want able to turn on/off the engine is the ignition key.
Who defines 'emergency'? |

Here is a solution: don't buy OnStar big brother equipped cars.
I enjoy my freedoms as much as any other American on this site. America is great because of freedom. However, I see it being unrealistic and unlikely that OnStar and LEO's would have the time and resources to go after individuals that are smoking, or have kids in the car while doing so, or are CCWing while driving. If you're in a police pursuit, especially if it's a stolen vehicle, cutting the engine off sounds like a safe way to end pursuit. |
You're just not gettin it man...it's not only about LEO's and OnStar!!! |
Why not cut the wires to the mic, and remove the antenna and get some kinda plug made to cover the hole where that ugly antenna was? And I'm sure you can unplug the onstar box somewhere.
Since the often get a house address wrong before breaking in and killing people, I would think this is a high probability. |
They integrate it into other essential systems and disableing it fucks up other stuff. |
It's not General Motors' job to protect me from myself. If I don't prepare, then tough. |
Dodge makes shitty cars these days. They haven't made a decent vehicle since 1973. |
This is all I'm gonna say about this and I'm done. OnStars central command or whatever the hell they have, could easily be hacked, and send out signals to EVERY car that this is installed in. It wouldn't be shit for any terrorist organization to accomplish. China has been hacking our .gov for years now for Christ's sake. Do you think OnStar is as well equipped?! |
I'm done too |
Been driving Dodge since 1994, all with very good results, and only a couple times in the shop, for recall work, which was done while I waited. I could on about the last new chevy I bought, I kept it less than a year, after the tranny went out I ditched it. |

A few years back when GM had their family member pricing for all i almost bought a Silverado. Except i couldnt find one without onstar and XM radio except for stripped work trucks. GM lost a sale. |
Right now, OnStar is a cell phone. In fact the first OnStar's were Motorola StarTacs. I think they are V60's now... I do think that the tin foil is WAY too tight in this thread. All this hacker talk is BS as the OnStar uses digital cellular networking and is almost impossible to "hack", especially on the fly like you are suggesting. |
It does not take a hacker, just a simple mistake.
Shitbird the criminal swaps plates in a parking lot with a similar GM vehicle to the one he is driving. After a quick stop for some at gunpoint cash, the chase starts... Right plate, wrong VIN. Someplace 15 miles away, somebody's car craps out. Cause an accident? Perhaps. Imagine your wife's car crapping out in a poor spot on the freeway. The OnStar operator telling her "Wait for the police, they have disabled your car" . Lem |
GPS signals are very weak, and require a sensitive antenna. Simply disconnecting the antenna or sheilding it with (dare I say it) tinfoil will render any GPS receiver inoperable. Cell phones are similar. Even if the system was integrated, you could easily locate the module and wrap it in several layers of RF sheilding and while it would continue to function, it would just think it's driving in a tunnel with zero reception. If it can't get the signal to shut down, it won't shut down.
I'm not advocating buying anything with onstar. But when the day comes sometime in the next 10-15 years where you ca't buy a car without it, it will be nice to know how to render it inoperable while retaining your car's functionality. My guess is you will aso be able to buy chinese-made ECU replacements that don't have tracking devices installed, and installing them will be a felony. |
I want one of those sticking up through my hood one day |
I don't think it's much of a stretch to see smoke detectors in cars in the near future. |
Especially in communist states that are creating laws against smoking in the car |
It used to be that neccessity was the mother of invention; nowdays if a technology exists, .gov, and corporate America finds a way to insert it into our daily lives for the purposes of behavior control.
And then "raises public awareness" to the fact that it's a desireable thing. In the not so far future; they'll forget about the cars and implant the damned chip right inside our melons. For our own good. And the sheeple will love it because it makes them safer, conserves energy, or some other shit. RE: ONSTAR: it could concievably be adapted to ensure that the vehicle isn't driven over the speed limit on any particular road, or driven at all for "frivolous purposes" in order to save the planet. |
This is an excellent reason to purchase a few ATV's. If you ever really needed transportation without all the tracking hassle, they're the way to go.
and they cant buy food without it, or have a job without it... anyone who doesnt think socialism is about to reach running strides is buying their coffee from starbucks... |
Deej86, Maybe look at it this way : You have seen Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring, correct? You know that 7 minute exposition at the start of the movie that fills in the viewer with the background of the story. Well remember what Galadreal said while talking about the lesser rings of power. "And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power." Thats the point and why many here feel this is A Bad Thing (TM) |

Fixed. (Oh, and I'll be on your side) |
Socialized everything, kinda like what will happen if Hitlery ascends, by putting an insane spin on the courts. |
This is why I distrusted OnStar as soon as I heard about it. I will never own a car with it.
For now.... Do ATV's, snowmobiles, dirtbikes, waverunners require any sorts of tags or plates in order to lawfully operate on non private areas? If so, then it is forseeable that they will have rfid chips in your tags/plates that are tracked on public roads. If the traffic cams see a vehicle with no plate that can't be "pinged" via rfid query on that road, the drones are called in to collar you for unauthorized access of public infrastructure. Just sayin.... |
Just imagine the first time the system malfunctions or some dipshit screws up and EVERY new GM car shuts down. You're going to have a lot of people stranded, with Fords, Toyotas, and Hondas driving right past them |
I quit buying GM about 4 years ago when their airbag deployment computers started storing acceleration and braking curves at the POI.
I don't need a Trooper writing me a citation or finding me at fault because someone downloaded my deployment cpu after an accident and used it to violate my 5th Amendment rights. |
Fuck that. If it comes to it I'll drive a 15 MPG Valiant or some damn thing. That is utter bullshit.
My grandpa was a plant manager for GM back in the day. I'm sure he'll be disappointed to see how far they've fallen.
+1. THIS won't cause any problems at all. No suddenly out of control vehicles losing their steering and brakes, and running down innocent people because somebody cut engine power. Nope. No problems at all. |
Hell, most Valiants came with a slant six! 20-22mph is easy if it's in good tune! |
