They are all good handguns, but since you said you wanted a "Classic", that would only leave you one choice......the Browning Hi-Power:

+1.

Of course, if you want it to be even "more classic," go with a Luger.

I picked the CZ.  After being weaned on the 1911 and carrying it as my service weapon the Glock just didn't fit when I tried them in the late 70's.  The Glock has an excellent reputation, but the CZ felt better in my hand.  The 92 felt like a 2X4, the BHP feels good, but the CZ takes everything about the HP and brings it up a notch.

CZ-75, one of the best values among handguns.  Only downside I can think of is weight, for the steel frame models.  I wish I could find one, but I guess my Sig will suffice.

I don't think yuor friend could go wrong with:
G17/19
Beretta 92
CZ75
SIG P226
XD9
..all of these would serve him well, it just depends on if he wants to carry, and what guns fits him best.

Yep.

Which is why its been used in so many major wars....oh wait....that's right, it hasn't.  That title belongs to the 1911.  Deal with it.

The g17 can do a lot of things.  However it has not achieved time travel capability's...... YET.

It's hard not to love the 226, especially if you have one of the older West German ones. I sold mine to my brother-in-law, but I know I can always get it back.

Glock 19 - its more easily concealed than a 17 and many argue it's even more reliable than the already highly reliable G17 and G26

Glock 19.I have Beretta, multiple SIG,Browning,Walther and S&W 9mm's as well and wouldn't necessarily say the 19 is the best of the them at any one thing but overall,if I could have only 1,it's what I'd go with.Big enough to shoot well, small enough to hide, holds many chances to be obnoxious, dead reliable, easy to obtain parts for,if ever needed or to keep as spares, and affordable. That might not equal perfection but it does equal damned good.

Hey, that's a GREAT 9MM. I used to have one, and I shot the hell out of it with very little maintenance. It never gagged. I shouldn't have sold it.

I want to love the Hi-Power. I really do. My problem is that my hands are so big there's no possible way for me to fire one without being eaten alive by the hammer. It is truly a gentleman's gun.

The pistol I'd love to try that would surely fit is the CZ75. It's another pistol for the "refined shooter" and simply oozes class. Better yet, magazines are still relatively cheap and more than plentiful.

My carry gun right now (and probably for a long time to come) is a Walther P99. If a BHP or CZ75 isn't available, I consider it most recommended. Magazines aren't cheap, but it's one sweet shooter!

Nothing wrong with any of them, honestly.  Go to a gun store, see which one fits him the best, or better yet, have him fire a magazine through each, see which he likes best.

Glock 19 if there can be only one.  Matter of fact it is my only 9mm at the moment.

That said, if I could keep only one pistol, it would be my Colt Gunsite CCO 1911 in .45acp of course.

Hit me up if you get it working right....... all the ones are jam-omatics that I have found.

As for the right 9mm, it should be the one that fits the owner's hand. That is what matters. Not what some gunstore or internet commando feels is the best weapon.

Beretta 92FS Vertec.    VERTEC!  I am so mad they stopped making them.

1911 grip angle
1911'ish trigger. Shorter pull, shorter reset than standard 92fs

Functions 100% with my can.

Fricking love it.
