Colt still has a couple guns marked "AR-15".
But like has been said to make them legal in some states, I bet other names are used "match target". CRC |
Thanks, I'm OFFICIALLY on the bandwagon. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=21&t=221967&page=1 |

my original Colt Government Carbine (GC0096xx) has AR-15 stamped on it AND has the small front pivot pin hole.... it also has the obligatory sear block as well.... unfortunately |
Steyr, your add states they are ".223". Is this "true"? No 5.56mm?
.223 Nato aka 5.56. |
ie Bend over here it comes agien. |
The M4/6920 has a 5.56 chamber and is marked 5.56 on the receiver |
I thought they were marked .223 on the receiver and 5.56 on the barrel. |
How come my A2 Sporter II has a serial number from 1974 then? WTF? AB |
I fail to understand the significance of whether it says AR15 or not. It's not like a bad guy is going to know the difference, nor will the paper or soda cans you shoot. They're rifles, not baseball cards. If a few characters on the side of your gun give you a hard on, make you all warm and happy inside, and compell you to shell out extra money or believe that your rifle is worth extra money, then I guess that's your perogative. Now, it makes no difference though. It's still just a black rifle, like millions of others out there, except your lower receiver is of older manufacture.
The last 3 I saw within the last 6 months were all marked 5.56 on the receiver |

I don't think I will sell my SP1 after 9/13. (Besides no one would pay $1400 for it like I did)
I might restore it to an A1 stock since I can put collapsing stock on my other AR's. |
I guess its like a lot of other things..... If you have one it is worth more money.
If you don't have one its not worth more money. |
Oh yeah,
And if you really want one its worth more money. If you don't really care one way or the other, its not worth more money. Now if Colt starts making new lowers marked AR-15, Govt Carbine, Govt Model, etc, then things get all confused. |
if you have one of those "gay" Polytech folders.
i sold the poly and norinco u-folders to guys with lots of money. i think they wax them...i've yet to see them shoot them. my sar's outshoot those chinese pipes and underfolders suck for cheek weld, suck at transmitting recoil to the face, negate the use of an optic mounting rail and are cold as all get out in winter. when it comes to folders, i much prefer the left-side folding russian/bulgarian polymer buttstock. i'll install a few on a some of my sar's and yeah...they're the same thing...a $175 commie rifle with ultimate utility, longevity and reliability. KALASHNIKOV! accept NO substitute! |
I bet it also says AR-15 next to the horsey. |
Actually I'm a shooter AND a collector. For example I have a 800,000 serial unfired M1 Garand and I have a 1944 very issued M1 Garand. To you they would probably be worth the exact same thing, 2 old rifles. One is just a bit more valuable to me. Call me crazy. |
I shoot my Polys. Also I like the side folders, underfolders suck and only belong on MP38/MP40s. |
This Gov't Carbine is marked AR15-A2 but does anyone really care?
The upper is an M4A1 upper or Colt Model R0977 from Specialized Armament |
How much fun is this topic?
Vintage Colts rock. Ahhh, the history....can ya smell it. |
Yup, it's Colt history. It's important. |
This was my first Colt & I didn't know that until now. . . Now I am even more happy about my purchase |
I'll tell you who cares. The same type of guy who bought the SS Camaro instead of the stripped 6cyl version. The same type of guy who bought the GTO instead of the LeMans. They will all get you from point "A" to point "B" but thats not why they bought them. |
Nice SEBR Bling!
I'm going to have to get mine out of storage and take some pics! BigDozer66 |
Ummm, no. The SS goes faster than the 6cyl The GTO is faster than the LeMans. The Colt doesn't functionally do a damn thing better than any other. You could say that the Colt is like a Boxster that costs $50k and doesn't functionally do anything better than a $25k WRX. |

Yes for sure if you can buy all the Colts AR/15's you can handle that would be where to put your money!
Why would you ask, because they are the rifle that caused the big shit storm! The collector value will be there while all others just become AR varients! And also Armalites early ones that we wouldn't want to own will become collector items as well! I have had a shit storm of bad press and e-mails about selling early Colt 20 rnd UI aloy followers, pre 70 mags! Hey you can buy AR/15's for less than Colt AR/15's! And you can buy non sixtys colt mags for less than new colt 20 rnders! But they are not the same!!! The sunnset does not effect the cost of things that will never be offered again! To collectors(not every day shooters) the price is much more!!! Bob |
and ultimately that's the difference. Some find value in ownership, others find value in function. |
I sold my son-in-law one of the nicest 1894 colt army Colts Iv'e ever seen!
You could buy a Tauras .38 special that would work just as good as this 114 year old revolver(left rotation) but do you really think the value is the same? I sold someone here from Texas a n Early DPMS before they had the panther on the reciever! What do you think that might be worth later down the road? You can buy all the AR/15's you want ,make them whatever(How many Colt AR/15's) marked such will you have? I know they suck but can you put your hands on one? It will get harder now than before! Bob |
I tend to find value in both. |
BTW, if you think markings on guns have little value, you should go to a coin show!
Another band of merry lunatics! Coins are a pretty well established investment at least, or can be. My grandfather had a bunch when he passed away and they sold them for quite a bit of money. The idea of "I should buy this super-secret special marked AR to finance my child's college education" just doesn't seem to plausible to me. I think with the guns it's more about owning something that few other people do. I just place no value in that. Neither view is right or wrong, just different. Although I have to admit that collectors (whether guns or barbie dolls, or commorative plates or whatever) are pretty strange. |
Uuuhmmm.... I don't own any guns. I traded them all for cigarettes and beer.
Nope. No guns at my house. No Class IIIs, SBRs, SBSs, AOWs. Nada, Zilch. |
Like I said 2 Garands... I have a 800,000 serial unfired M1 Garand and I have a 1944 very issued M1 Garand. To you they would probably be the exact same thing, 2 old rifles. One is just a bit more valuable to me. Call me crazy. |
And you think that THIS is the thing that makes you crazy? |
Having an AR-15 marked AR-15 is just nice to have.
I got rid of all my prebans, even preban Colts and kept only 1, the AR-15A2 marked Colt. Why, because IMO, you gotta have at least one labeled AR-15. |
Value wise, that is a bad comparison. It's a simple fact with just about anything that an unused item/product will always command a higher price than a used counterpart. It's very clear to understand why one is more valuable than the other. Now if they were both very well "issued" and you felt one had more value because of the serial #, that would be different. It could in your opinion hold more value, but I think it would be silly to go around telling people it's more valuable because it is 800,000 as opposed to 931,496. |
A 800,000 serial would be more valuable than a 3,500,000 serial in the same condition. And a Winchester Garand would be more valuable than a Springfield Garand in the same condition. And technically a 800,000 serial would be more valuable than a 931,496 serial but not by very much and Garand collector prices would have to get a LOT higher for it to be a true variable. If and when they get into the Single Action Army collector type market small differences like that will be a big deal. |
That may be the way it is in collector circles. I'm just saying in my opinion, it's silly for collectors to try and convince people it's more valuable since it came off the same assembly line first. Sorta like a dick measuring thing I guess. I'm know I'm not going to convince you otherwise. I'm just piping in with my two cents really. |
Not silly just true. It IS more valuable because of collectors. I'm sure if you had Springfields serial #1 you'd sell it to me for the going CMP price though. |
Oh no! I am hypocritical. I'd be cashing that baby in for everything it's worth to somebody who thinks it's worth paying a truck load of cash for! Everybody has their own thing. I'd lay down $100,000 if I had it for the last Pulse Rifle used in Aliens that Bapty in the UK owns, despite being able to build several with that kind of money (taking into account Class 3 Thompson M1A1 prices). Some people are going to think that's incredibly silly and moronic. To me it's more of a childhood dream thing. I've wanted a real pulse rifle since seeing the movie as a child. |

I do! I preordered a Colt 6721 yesterday! Stamped "AR-15 A3" followed by "Tactical Carbine" www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?ItemNum=6015662 |
