I have a 590A1 Blackwater edition and a 930 SPX Blackwater edition.  They're fun to shoot and I've had no problems.  My wife really enjoys to 930 and it's pretty much become her gun.  I use my pistol AR for home defense.  It's more maneuverable and holds more ammo.  You can build a good AR setup for the specified amount, but if he's not into firearms I can see why you would want to get him a shotgun to start.  What kind of solid is doing for you to want to drop $500, or is this a SSS situation?

Well, sort of a SSS thing.

Known the cat since 92. We work together. He's helping me with some of the upcoming NYS gun law nonsense.

I'd go with a basic 18.5 inch pump action like a Mossberg 500 or the less expensive Mav 88. Maybe get a decent white light mounted on it. And if you really want to make sure he can defend himself get him some ammo to practice with.

Get a used beat up police trade in 870 for half your budget, and clean it up and put a new barrel with tritium sites, magazine extension, maybe one of the surefire foregrips on it.. save the money up front so in your budget you can make it something nice for him. it'll mean more that way anyway. bonus if your under budget, you can hook him up with a case of buckshot too.

This. Find a mag tube extension and he's set.

Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or Mossberg 590

I got an awesome, like new early 70s 870 Wingmaster...beautiful bluing/checkering. It came with a 30" barrel for trap/bird, so I bough a 20" rifled sights rem barrel for home defense/slugs. Paid 400 on gunbroker, and another 200 for the additional barrel. I'm very happy with it. Complements my Ithaca rifle barrel, Beretta O/U and beretta a400 xplor really well.

ARF says shotguns are only for birds, and he must have an AR.

I have a 590 for HD... I thought I would be fine with the safety... It annoys the shit out of me. Wish I would have gotten an 870, or better yet a semi auto. One of these days I'll trade up or buy a shorter barrel and mag extension for my Rem 11-87.

For me?  I'll take a mossberg 930spx

Ruger Mini-14 or perhaps a WASR10.

If he's trusting his life to it, nothing with the numbers "870" in it.

Try to find a used Beretta 1200 or 1201.  Best bang for your buck.
If you're paranoid and silly about things and must have a pump-action, I'd say a variant of the Mossberg 590 that you happen to like.
If there is cash---Benelli.  Accept no substitute.

I'd say an 870 or 590 and add one of these...

False. ARF says birdshot is for birds.

Truth.

The majority of ARF doesn't have the experience to know that rifles trump shotguns for HD.

The remainder do.

Actually I do own one.  And no, I have not had an issue with it yet.  Granted it only has about 400 shells through it.

Remington 887 "tactical" for the win.

Pump, weather resistant, screw in choke tubes, hi vi front sight, rail on receiver if you want a dot, extended tube,  easy to mount a sling, forward rail section, and takes 3.5's so you can kill a goose if you want to.  (comes with a plug for duck season too)

What's not to like?  (other than it's ugly)

Do you own one of these 887s?  If you do and you haven't had problems, count yourself as one of the fortunate few.

You have the luck.  Buy a lottery ticket.

I changed to a Mossberg 590A1.  Love it, although the barrel is a bit heavy for indoors work.

For a HD shotgun, I tend to like autos. The one I keep in the closet now is an old 20" barrel Rem 1100 I have slightly modified for 3-gun. New loader gate, stock set, tube extension and some ghost ring tritium sights. Runs like a raped ape. Im in it for around $550

If sold on a pump, older Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 20" barrel, tube extension, and some big ass tritium sights.

The only one I have any experience with is a Verona semi auto...had no issues with it really.  I'd want to try an 870 because I've heard it's THE shotgun to have.

I was going to recommend this or a Winchester 1300 Defender.

He's a good dude and I don't want to go cheap, but I'm not looking to go above about $600.

Remington and Mossberg are the two brands I've looked at....but there are too many choices.

The only thing I'm sure of is I'd like it to have the 18.5" barrel.

Any advice or recommendations?
