Quoted: Wow, I guess I must be pretty naive, all this time I thought food stamps were only for people with dependent children. Had no idea that single, able bodied, educated people were able to get them. Soon those on food stamps will be openly mocking those who are not, it may already be at that point in some areas of the country. |

Okay, that's it. I'm going to spend some time on "benefits.gov" and see exactly what programs I can qualify for. Then I'll calculate my Federal tax burden and do my utmost best to get "freebies" to that dollar amount. It'll be a miracle if I even come close but, just in case, I will make it a "hard stop" at the amount I paid in Federal tax so that I'm not actually being a parasite. I can't stop them from robbing me at gunpoint but I can pick their pockets as they turn to leave. And, when they raise my taxes, I'll qualify for more. Net-neutral.

Fuck you, hipsters!
I'm eating food from fucking Aldi and I'm eating microwavable mac and cheese and I work for my goddamn food, while you get to go to farmers markets and use your goddamn food stamps for fucking triple creme cheese and Japanese eggplant. FUCK YOU! |

The rugged capitalists that run bodegas, stop-and-robs, and ghetto grocery stores will never allow meaningful food stamp reform. The food manufacturers will not either. Any attempt will be beaten back by pictures of swollen bellied youngsters, and reformers will look like Scrooge slapping bowls of gruel out of grimy hands. |
|
I honestly think the only reform that has a chance of passing is a public registry of welfare benefits.
If CCW'rs can be outed based upon the public's right to know government workings, then welfare recipients fall under the same rubric. This would include agra-welfare as well. |

Arrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
The dude has a 'part time blogging job', WTF? Get a job!!!!!!! |

Here's the kicker: They are purposely made to taste like ass so as to avoid people becoming overly dependent. Didn't the army do the same thing with the emergency D-ration bar, back in the day? IIRC, the guy who put out the request said it should taste "little better than a boiled potato". ETA: I'd be way into people chow, too. Seems like a fine idea, to me. |

Maybe they can get jobs as cooks.. or get free money from the gov to set up their own restaurant business..
Seared Rabbit with Lemongrass Risotto.. side of crushed garlic and drawn butter.. sparkling water.. and Maple Pecan Pie a la Mode.. that kind of shit. |

Many here talk about "Going Galt" in order to bring down the system. Getting on the dole in addition to denying the government tax revenue would accelerate the process.
Again, I'm just sayin'... |

Exactly! Get home from work, throw a can of bachelor chow in the food dish and mic it for a couple minutes while I crack open a crisp, flavorless Löbrau.. |

For many years I've answered questions about what I like to cook by saying I just pick up 25 pound bags of Bachelor Chow. |

This would essentially be using a Cloward-Piven strategy. The problem is that when the system breaks, whoever is the best organized are going to be the ones positioned to set up the new system. The left is VERY good at organizing, and have been attempting to enact a Cloward-Piven social welfare overload since the 1960's. While it could potentially work, we are VERY late to that game. |

We should all just suck it up, swallow our pride and get on the bandwagon. Let's all get all we can from the government and get this shit over sooner. Setting our country back 50 years by going the route of Greece is not a smart option. You may not like the SHTF option as much as you think when we finally get it. The last election was won by a sliver. The margin of victory was considerably less than 2008. Things did move in the right direction regardless of what the pundits are saying, just not far enough. We need to press on and keep drilling the message that Obama owns the mess he is creating. |

Said it actually made good cereal. We then discussed as a solution to food stamps, instead having free 25 lb bags of "Purina People Chow" on pallets at the front of every grocery store. Bland, nutritious, free. I would like to try this "monkey chow".... |

Maybe it's just me but for some reason I thought they'd qualify for a lot more?
150 for one person and 200 for the other doesn't seem like as much as I assumed they'd get, although I completely agree they should be buying bulk packs of ramen noodles and 10 lb bags of rice and beans |

If I could get food stamps I would.

Via Salon:
They’re young, they’re broke, and they pay for organic salmon with government subsidies. Got a problem with that?
In the John Waters-esque sector of northwest Baltimore — equal parts kitschy, sketchy, artsy and weird — Gerry Mak and Sarah Magida sauntered through a small ethnic market stocked with Japanese eggplant, mint chutney and fresh turmeric. After gathering ingredients for that evening’s dinner, they walked to the cash register and awaited their moments of truth.
"I have $80 bucks left!” Magida said. "I’m so happy!”
"I have $12,” Mak said with a frown.
The two friends weren’t tabulating the cash in their wallets but what remained of the monthly allotment on their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program debit cards, the official new term for what are still known colloquially as food stamps.
Magida, a 30-year-old art school graduate, had been installing museum exhibits for a living until the recession caused arts funding — and her usual gigs — to dry up. She applied for food stamps last summer, and since then she’s used her $150 in monthly benefits for things like fresh produce, raw honey and fresh-squeezed juices from markets near her house in the neighborhood of Hampden, and soy meat alternatives and gourmet ice cream from a Whole Foods a few miles away.
"I’m eating better than I ever have before,” she told me. "Even with food stamps, it’s not like I’m living large, but it helps.”
Mak, 31, grew up in Westchester, graduated from the University of Chicago and toiled in publishing in New York during his 20s before moving to Baltimore last year with a meager part-time blogging job and prospects for little else. About half of his friends in Baltimore have been getting food stamps since the economy toppled, so he decided to give it a try; to his delight, he qualified for $200 a month.
"I’m sort of a foodie, and I’m not going to do the ‘living off ramen’ thing,” he said, fondly remembering a recent meal he’d prepared of roasted rabbit with butter, tarragon and sweet potatoes. "I used to think that you could only get processed food and government cheese on food stamps, but it’s great that you can get anything.”
"... toiled in publishing...." What a joke. We're supposed to have sympathy for these assholes? |
