In a new automotive application, we have used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to map the raw pixels from a front-facing camera to the steering commands for a self-driving car. This powerful end-to-end approach means that with minimum training data from humans, the system learns to steer, with or without lane markings, on both local roads and highways. The system can also operate in areas with unclear visual guidance such as parking lots or unpaved roads.

That sounds like a lot like Level 5....pretty freaking huge huge. Ford was trying to get there by 2021.

So the makers of fucking video cards believe they can do cars.
Hmmm. |

Self driving cars can't come fast enough for those of us living in Houston.

Somehow this is going to tie into epic Russian dash cam footage.
I don't quite know how, but that's my prediction. |

The other day I sat at a light...it turned green...and then red, and only one person made it through before it changed. I was the only one who honked, and I did so at the end of the cycle....we were ALL looking at our phones while sitting there. I just happened to get bored and look up in time to catch the last bit o' green. There were probably 10 cars, it was a 2 lane road.
Yeah, we need self driving cars for sure . |

9 layer CNN with 250 k nodes. Jesus...
The actual technical paper was a little light on the details I would like to know about. But then again... I do this shit for a living. This is NOT an all weather system, this is not a learning system, this does not account for dynamic conditions, etc etc. Typical blog post BS for description of this paper. The big take away should be massively parallelized CNN training on a GPU; NOT "autonomous" cars. |

All it has to do, is be better than you. Right now an automated car will get in an accident about once every million miles. The average human will be involved in an accident once every one hundred seventy thousand miles. ...or so. So, yeah. They're better than humans. |

Humans are so much better? Computers are 100 times more competent at menial tasks. LIKE DRIVING. Than humans are. Even if there are accidents from an autopilot car. |

I want to watch the highlight reel of that 100 hours it spent learning.

I've done 2 million miles so far. 7 accidents. One I was at fault for. There are too many variables beyond anyone's control. The people who are comfortable with computers in control are also comfortable with governments in control.
