judging by the responses, we've got a long way to go before any tax reform to reverse course.

most people are content with the current tax system.

My grandparents on both sides worked for 40+ years, both lived in two bedroom, one bathroom houses. Both owned a single car. Vacations were rare, and usually used to visit relatives. I don't think they ever flew on a plane.

So where is the part where folks from today have it worse off?

Something like 80% of Americans can't cover a $500 emergency.  People are broke.  They wanted to destroy the middle class and it's worked pretty well.

Taxes are needed for a civilized society for things such as roads, police, fire, schools, etc. The problem is only half the population is contributing to those things.

I agree the tax brackets system is a fucked up system and it doesn't make sense that the motivated folks that earn more have to pay more.

I disagree. Employees pay the price for payroll taxes.  Employees pay half and the employer "pays half."  The payroll taxes are just deducted from what the employee would be paid without the taxes.

The bulk of your and my tax dollars goes to Welfare.  Worry about that before worrying about child tax credits.

Successful people need to be encouraged to have kids.  And before you carp about "If they were successful they wouldn't need a tax credit", let me ask why not?  The best biological age to have kids isn't the best "financial age" to have them.

Children are the future of the nation.  So ask yourself, do you want that future to be decided by hard working people, or ghetto layabouts who don't even know who both their parents are?

I was against the child credit until someone pointed a similar theory out to me. The problem is that you have 50% of the people paying jack and shit. We need to flat tax everyone and force "labor credits", negative (owed) for those that take and positive (earned) for those that do. Make those that own work for those that give. Until people realize where the money is coming from and need to "pay it back" in some form or another there is no reprocussions.

Some people have a strange sense that business owners can deduct 100% of their expenses and hide all income from the IRS. I hear it all the time about it is just a tax write off from people who don't have a clue.

Once upon a time, there was a people who inhabited a majestic land under an all-powerful government. Now this government had the resources to control practically every aspect of human existence; hundreds of thousands of “public servants” could access the most personal details of every citizen’s life because everyone was issued a number at birth with which the government would track him throughout his life. No one could even work in gainful employment without this number.

True, the government left certain domains of individual action largely free, particularly matters concerning speech and sex. These activities posed no real threat to the state. When not used to entertain and divert, the power of speech was used principally to clamor for more or better goods from the state, or for “reforms” to make the state work “better,” thereby entrenching the people’s dependency. And insofar as sex was concerned, well, the people’s behavior in this area also really had no effect on the scope of state power. In fact, the rulers noted that people’s preoccupation with matters of sexual morality – whether premarital, teenage pregnancy, adultery, divorce, homosexuality or general “who’s zooming who” – diverted the people’s attention from the fact that they were, for economic and all other intents and purposes, slaves.

Slaves, though, who labored under the illusion that they were free. The people were a simple lot, politically speaking, and readily mistook the ability to give free reign to their appetites as the essence of “personal freedom.”

In that fruitful land, the state took about 50 percent of everything the people earned through numerous forms of taxation, up from about 25 percent only a generation earlier. However, this boastful people, who believed themselves to be the freest on earth, retained the right to keep and bear arms. Tens of millions of them possessed firearms – just in case their government became tyrannical and enslaved them.

In that land, an astronomical number of regulations, filling more than 96,000 pages in the government’s “code of regulations,” were promulgated by persons who were not elected by the people. The regulators often developed close relationships with the businesses they regulated, and work in “agencies” that had the power both to make law – and to enforce it.

I think it boils down to a matter of principals - or the lack of them.  Income tax (Fed and State), property tax (and yes, renters also pay), tax on this, tax on that, tax on every 'manufactured' items in existence from the raw material (even prior to that given the brain power/concept phase and tax's taken out of peoples wages), through all phases of manufacturing, sales, etc.  Have you agreed to have anything taken from you?  Do you know where your money goes and if you do and do not like it, what can you do about it (hint: nothing).  Who benefits?  Is the system rigged (and if so, what can you do about it?)?  When is enough, enough?  Do you actually own (as in property) anything?  And if the answer is no, what does that make you and what does that say about the concept of a 'free' society?  Rant/rave all you want but telling the truth might just be a good beginning ..........

Or you know, we could all just band together and well..... not pay taxes. It is actually a brilliant strategy if you can get 10s of millions to go along with it. It is the ultimate "go fuck yourself we're done with this bullshit" move short of violence, of course.

Federal taxes exist you know, and in a lot of states they far and away trump the states tax. hell, it costs my company over $100k just to employ them, 7% of payroll. think about that, to put people to work I have to pay the gov't to do so. it's a racket and this country is long overdue for a tax reset.
