30,000 people, 75 million dollars.  That doesn't add up in my book.

I supported myself through college.  I held a full time job, made house and car payments, paid for my own food, etc.  It can be done.

Thats $2500 each, which adds up to $1250/semester. Sounds about right for a meal plan.

Granted it wasn't yesterday but in college (Late 90's) I ate well on $25-$35/week (Probably < $600-700/semester). Even better when I had roommates and we pooled our funds for groceries.

The school meal plans cost about that back then, but for a food stamp program for buying groceries that above figure is nuts.

1 box of mac and cheese + 1 can of tuna = delicious casserole dinner for two nights.  Total cost = about $2.

Or you could work at a restaurant and scam free meals.

I agree.  When I did my undergrad I lived w/ 2 others guys and we polled our money and bought a lot of ramen, alot of $1 Hungry Man meals and whatever else was cheap.  We all had jobs, worked at least 20 hours a week and went to school full time.  We still had enough time to drink and party, but we didn't get to nearly as much as some kids did.

More from the Detroit News

Many see using food stamps while attending school as a scam, and former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick described it in much that way in his new autobiography.

Kilpatrick, who was recently released from state prison after serving time for violating probation and awaits trial on federal corruption charges, revealed he used food stamps when he attended Florida A&M University in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At the time, his mother was a state representative and his father was a top Wayne County official.

"The food stamp game is an old hook-up in neighborhoods from Detroit to Tallahassee," Kilpatrick said in the book. "If you could get them, especially as a struggling college student, then you did." ..........

As the twig is bent so grows the tree.

It's fucking amazing what kind of fucking douchebag assholes can get elected into office.

Really?  This is Detroit, and you're amazed?

While it is all good to remember how one did it down in memory lane............................one needs to remember that it isn't memory lane anymore.

Usually, I can eat quite cheaply on raw goods, but in the past few months, I've watched some prices go up like on avocados, from .50 to .95. What the affect on other foods is, I don't know........and it just might be that the avocados are out of season, hence the price. Still, though, it makes one stop and wonder.

Does that mean they should have the food stamps? I can't really see much of a reason why. No, it just means think twice before one demands that they financially consume food like they did.....back then.

...........................and the dollar stores are great places to shop for pantry foods.

Pay as you go would have been a blessing at my college.

Even our Tier 1 meal plan () was good Monday through Friday ONLY.  For the weekend, you were on your own –– even if mom & dad ponied up for the gold-plated meal plan.    So you had to fend for yourself at least two days out of the week.

Needless to say, I became very familiar with Shin Ramyun instant noodles and chopped up hot dogs as a primary source of food.

Sounds like a modern version of Tom Brown's Schooldays..........................poaching on the local lands.....................................

In reality, that's sort of what we told sailors, back in the Cold War, on comrats, whether they were on or off base. Pool it, get a frig, and fill it with sandwich makings. On a related note, I know a retired Infantry Captain who essentially lives off his retired pay. He's able to do it because he doesn't eat much, is a heck of an outdoorsman, hunts, fishes..........and works on his own Merecedes.

I was on a 7 day board plan which included everything but Sunday dinner. The way we usually did that was to go out to some Wendy's or such, get our beef......and top it massively at the salad bar.

These days, I don't eat on campus for three main reasons. First, the snack bar schedules are usually not mine. For example, a few years ago, I would get off work at 0800 but I was shocked that the snack bars weren't serving coffee or even open till about 1000. Secondly, my style of eating has changed, since I was in the Navy, over the years from packaged to cooking with raw goods. Such as buying food in bulk, cutting it up, and freezing it. Third, to me, the food on campus is designed for youngsters who burn anything up quick and not us older ones.

On that notion of the last, ramen is not a workable solution for me, too much salt...................but spaghetti is. It's cheap, it's filling, and while a big pot on the stove with water is best, one could also do it in a microwave.

If one wants to or has to eat on the cheap, provided they have a grocery store or a Big Lots type place and some kind of storage, there are lots of little tricks one can use or learn to pull it off. It may not be necessarily fantastic, such as what a bag of tortillas and a jar of peanut butter might be over time.........but it will keep a person alive.

I'm telling you guys, we are fed up with the libtards in Michigan.

HUGE changes are coming.

Libtards do not hold the majority in ANY area of government that I can think of.

They had their chance and blew it.

The other recent biggie was 48 months of welfare maximum.  (Barring disabilities that are REAL.)

After that, fu** you, get a job or move to another State.
