This is a wakeup to know what you would do before it happens. It was reported to be a trailer home so probably not very large. Grab the dogs on the way out. Consider getting a smoke hood to give you a few more seconds. Here is one review on a few smoke hoods. I have no idea what the best one is today.. If you are smart enough to make a 55 gallon drum fire place you should be smart enough to cut some doggie escape hatches in your double wide.

Tough one for sure.. If I though i had a chance I would give it a try.

I'd do the same damn thing. My cats and dog first, everything else can be replaced.

I would not risk my life for my pets. I love them dearly but not more than life. I would do that for my kids yes.

I feel the same way. I'd go in a bit and see if I could get the dog to come to me but I'm not going to commit myself to search and rescue with no PPE or SCBA for an animal. No offense but that just sounds like a stupid idea to me. |

Stupid.
But it wouldn't be the first stupid thing I've done while knowing it was stupid. |

The only way I would go into a burning home for a dog is so I could use it to bust down the door my kid is behind.

Pyle said the home was heated by a 55-gallon drum wood burner. I have never heard of such a thing, home made? That is just a little north of where I live, and have fished in the vicinity. There is some real poverty around parts of western PA (which maybe some don't get see out in the countryside), figured it was maybe a kerosun heater but thats pretty bad. This Was mostly a coal mining area, and agricultural. The police could have been several minutes out, and VFD even more. |

I would probably die the same way. If my dogs were trapped inside of my burning house, you better believe I'm going back in there for them.
|
|
Protip: running into a burning building without the right equipment for a dog doesnt make you a hero, it makes you dead. Gone. No more. Worm food. Deceased.
Don't leave your family and friends behind wondering why they lost you over an animal. I loved all my pets greatly, but in the end, they are an animal, not a person |

Not saying what he did wasn't stupid, just saying I understand. I would almost put money on it that the dog died of smoke inhalation before it burned to a crisp. That being said, the man did a noble thing. Not the smartest thing, but noble none the less. |

Those of you with children would risk your lives to save an animal? View Quote This. Priorities and all. Edit: Never mind kids, how about anyone who cares about or relies on you in any way? People need to have more respect for human life, even if it's their own. This is coming for someone who grew up on a hobby farm and has cried at the death of every single dog, cat, horse etc... that I've owned. For those saying he didn't plan for it to turn out the way it did...ummm yeah no kidding he didn't plan to die but you don't go running into a burning house without knowing you are putting yourself at considerable risk. |

I probably wouldnt, but then again maybe. Important thing is the dude was able to make the choice. Unlike that dude that got tazed trying to get his kid. Which is honestly what i thought this thread was gonna be about at first.

As a father of two boys, I would have to say that my main focus is getting them out obviously, but if I can, I'm going to try like hell to get my dog. Would I go in in knowingly that there was a good chance I wouldn't come back out.....no...... But I understand a man's love for his dog.....sorry to hear...

Did it for my son's parrot,we had a fire and when we got to the front door the bird was screaming my name.
I was crawling under the smoke dragging it's cage behind me.He made it out alive. Looking back it was stupid, but I didn't think about what I was doing I just did it. |

Pyle said the home was heated by a 55-gallon drum wood burner. I have never heard of such a thing, home made? It's made from a kit you buy on line. They work REALLLY well but no way in hell would I ever put one in a goddamn trailer. They tend to rust out quickly and collapse when the fire gets hot. I can heat a whole pole barn with one, 50'x75' Here is the one I get from Tractor Supply. They are good for about a season and then need to be replaced. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/united-states-stove-barrel-stove-kit |

A human life is infinitely more valuable than an animal's. View Quote Yes, this is true. And if some cop tazed my ass then cuffed me to stop me from running into the house I would thank him later... really I would. But people don't think rationally in the heat of the moment sometime. I would hope that I had the sense and self control not to go throwing my life away for my dog. But I probably wouldn't. |
