I've always wondered... what, exactly, does "get to the fleet" mean?  When you're actually deployed on a ship, or just some shitty posting that everyone goes to fresh out of school or ???

Getting to "the fleet" is when you actually get to your first permanent duty station/unit.  The fleet is basically when you are finally out of school and go to do your job.  Hope this was helpful

Pat

A little more specifically, duty in the Fleet Marine Forces. MARFORLANT (formerly, Fleet Marine Force Atalntic) or MARFORPAC (formerly, Fleet Marine Force Pacific).

Security forces, 8th & I, Instructor, Recruiter, DI, etc, not "The fleet".
