Glock 17 for strictly range.
I want to say avoid everything else but I feel that would piss in the cornflakes of too many people, so...avoid any 9mm 1911-style handgun. |
Opinions are like assholes......everyone's got one.
My advice is narrow down the choices to 2 or 3 and then rent them and have a little range time with them. The right weapon is the one you feel comfortable with and can consistenly hit your target. Just my assho....uh I mean opinion. |
+1 I have to agree. Not a big Glock fan. I can out shoot my buddy who shoots with his Glock constantly. |

This is truthful, wise advice. Handguns fit the person, there's no general choice that fits all. If it's a first handgun though I do recommend looking closer at handguns that have a manual safety till you learn more and develop good safe handling practices and mindset. You'll find more than a couple threads about dumbass's shooting themselves with their non-manual safetied pistols. |

CZ-75B. Get several 16-round magazines and then spend the remaining couple hundred bucks on ammo. Now you have a quality firearm that is absolutely reliable and plenty to go with it.
cz75 for the win
generally more accurate cheaper STEEL frame better ergonomics get a better pistol and still have money for ammo |
+1 to the xd |

bersa actually makes a decent "cheap" gun. they do have heavy triggers and parts and mags can be hard to find though. for the price i'd still consider a cz75. 10 times the gun of the bersa. |
I'd buy four Hi-Points, because I am an Indian deity with excess appendages.
...and if two fo them jammed, I'd still have two more. |
If I were to drop that much on a 9 mm it would be a Walther P-88 or an FN Hi Power.
G17 + mags
Runs like clockwork cheap mags durable finish Avoid anything bersa You made that sound like a hard question. |
Browning Hi Power and dont look back EVAR!!! Or you can get a nice HK USP they are very secksy .

Why are you buying from that place? It's retail pricing, you could get a lot more pistol for your dollars elsewhere.
And for what it's worth, sig is where it's at if you're going 9mm. I own a glock, a USP, and a beretta in 9mm. But for me it's all about the sig. Bought a 229 18 months ago, and just dropped another 700 on a sig p226 dak. Great stuff. |
I'd rather have a guy driving with nystagmus who's paying attention to the road rather than some soccer mom doing her hair, makeup, text-messaging and changing the radio stations 13 times a minute. Unless of course the nystagmus is alcohol-induced! |

Sig P226 or SP2009/SP2022 (Same weapon aside from the rail, plastic Sigs are a bargain). If you can find a P228 for a good price, just as good. If you are gay a Glock 17 or 19 would fit the bill nicely.
Any of these weapons could be had for $400 or so on the used market leaving you with plenty of money for accessories and training ammo. All of them will be dead on reliable, even those horrible Glocks. |
FAIL. Especially Kimbers. Why would you want a huge full size single stack 9mm? Especially a brand of questionable quality/reliability. |
PS, 9mm is a great caliber for target shooting or defensive uses given good ammo.
It is by far the cheapest centerfire pistol cartridge in existence and is perfectly lethal with good JHPs. |
M&P 9mm.
It fits everyone, points like a fucking dream, reliable and accurate. Everything you love about Glocks, but nothing you hate about Glocks. |
Beretta 92FS > all other 9mms
All joking aside, go to a range and rent some of the prospects and see what YOU like. Any modern firearm from a reputable manufacturer should function fine. Don't get too caught up in the Ford vs Chevy type arguments. |
Hmmm. I would say start with shooting a G19 or BHP. Kind of the extremes of the single/double action feel, steel/plastic thing. After that, then you enter the realm of choice. The Beretta is just too huge for a 9 but is easy to shoot. HK is kind of bulky but nicely engineered and has double strike on a misfire which some folks believe is important (Sig too but hate the feel and seem overly complicated). S&W/Walther is nice but hinged trigger felt odd to me. I like the G19 for it's simplicity and absolute resistance to crud. Once you learn to stage the trigger it is very fast too. I have several Glocks and near as I can tell cleaning makes no impace on reliabilty. But I also like the BHP for it's slim profile relative to capacity, general feel and ergonomics. It has a natural "pointability" that is hard to beat and a great trigger. If you do anticipate carry, then the Kahr is also a good pic but carries a lot less rounds, is harder to shoot well and so on. Pretty lively with +P ammo too and I had to build up the grip a bit with tape to keep from pressing the mag release when shooting (I have long fingers). It carries lighter and flatter than most anything else. I hear that the Kahr's will not last long with +P either but I don't know. They will cycle fine, just snappy.

Double strike isn't an important feature, and at any rate, any DA pistol does this. Hardly exclusive to HK or SIG. CLICK, no bang = rack slide, chamber new round.
I WILL get flamed for this, but i want the Para 9MM 1911
Seriously, I cant afford to have all the pistols I want, and I want a 1911, but cant afford to shoot .45ACP. So by default, I want the Para 9mm 1911. LINK TO PISTOL OK, lemme have it, I am prepared. |
G19
spend the rest on mags, ammo, and more ammo of course, you could get 2 Gen 2s |
I hate Glock, but for carrying you can't beat the lightweight of the polymer frame. They are butt ugly, but are reliable enough to stake your life on.
For the range, and if you don't mind the extra weight of a metal frame, you cannot beat a SIG. I am a big fan of SIGs. 226 is a full frame and might be a little big for carry, but is fantastic on the range. 229 is the intermediate frame and might be just the thing for you that does both. 239 is the small frame, good for carry, less good for the range. An interesting compromise is the 225, which is full frame size, but only single stack, so it is not as wide and will fit under clothes better. For self defense I'm not sure you need high capacity, so single stack is OK. You are not kicking in a door of a crack house to go after a room full of drug dealers, you are trying to convince some guy he does not really want your wallet. One shot will likely do the trick. Now, here is my 2c worth that everyone else has not already said: look for a Certified Pre Owned SIG. SIG sells these that are trade ins. The great deal is they are gone through and checked by an armorer, parts are replaced, they have full warranty and a low price. Indeed, the attention these reworked guns get from the armorers likely beats the attention a new gun gets as it is assembled off the line. Net, you save money and get a superior product. Final advice, do not get a 1911. I love it, it is classic, but the design is 100 years old and not very reliable. Lost of brand new guns need all sorts of gunsmith tweeking to get them to run right. I love the 1911, but don't trust it enough that I would ever stake my life on it by carrying. Art |

There is no better 9mm handgun than the Sig p226/228 (your preference).

CZ75
You should try out various makes until you find one you like. Your budget allows some extra $ for plenty of practice ammo. |
And plenty of mags, and perhaps a little bit of training, too. |

Browning Hi-Power or HP clone.
You can get a Charles Daly HP for $299 from CDNN Investments. It isn't as nice as a Browning or FN but it isn't bad. Comes with XS Sights Express Sights and nice rubber grips. I just got one and I'm pleased with it. Second choice would be the CZ-75 or one of the EAA Witness clones of it. I have the earlier TZ-75 and it's a nice pistol. Solid and reliable. Seeing that they carry stuff from Century Arms International, an offbeat choice might be the Daewoo DH51. I have the DH40 and its not bad. Both have the SFS system which is nice. It is the standard sidearm of the ROK Army. |
Ouch! Some of their stuff is a little spendy dontcha think?
Some of the prices seem great, but some just seem freakin unreal! |
Glock is on the low end of my list. Of the 3 or 4 glocks I have owned, two of them have seen fit to put the brass right on my forehead. Screw that.
I have owned Ruger, Beretta, FN, etc. and would take any of them over a glock = yuck piece of crap anyday. I would have to vote for a hi power given that a long time friend of mine was forced to kill a bad guy once while in a diner and this did it for him. |
P99 is a good choice... Sig also makes an awesome weapon... if you want to stay on the cheaper side there's always the XD
A good condition Beretta 92 will set you back about $300. I bought mine for a bit less. I have a G17 and like it also.
I've had 2 G19's and they are great pistols. Always lusted after a HK P7 or a BHP. |
90% of your decision will be how the weapon feels in your hand. I would narrow it down between a Glock, Smith and Wesson M&P, SIG, HK or XD. Don't worry about the lack of a manual safety that is why you have a brain and have a good holster to protect the trigger.

i see you're from TN and on Coal Creek's site. they have an indoor range where you can test some guns.
try a few out |
