I hope Mr. Leatherman does go to the press with his whining. Other company bosses are no doubt somewhat more intelligent and won't repeat the mistake he made that costs them substantially after they read what happens to his business.

Amazingly enough, you can't buy a hunting or fishing magazine without seeing full page color ads from Columbia. Anyone email them for a reaction?

One of the members recieved a response:

Hello Bart,

That's your right.  I'm curious though.  I have received several e-mails very similar to yours.  I assume you and the others have been requested by someone else to write them.  Is this correct?  If so, who is it?  If the candidates, or the political parties, or someone affiliated with them are creating campaigns to retaliate economically against people who express a political opinion, I'd like to provide that information to the press and see what kind of backlash occurs.

Meanwhile we should be able to have an honest difference of opinion on which candidate will best support the interests of all Americans.

In a nutshell, my position is that personally, I am quite sure I am benefiting much more from the Bush tax cuts and other economic policies than most people, but I'm very concerned about where the policies of the current administration are taking this country.  I'm very concerned that many, many people are not better off now than they were three and one half years ago, and I'm even more concerned about the future for our children and grandchildren.  I don't agree with everything Kerry and Edwards propose either, but I think we need a change.

I'm not trying to alienate customers.  I have over 300 people working here in my Portland factory.  Four years ago I had more.  I'd like to at least keep my current employees employed and preferably add more.

Maybe I wasn't very smart to give my job title and business affiliation when I gave my endorsement, rather than to do it personally, but I did.  If it costs me business, so be it.  I'm still going to do my absolute best to make great tools and hope that all Americans, of any political affiliation, will find them of value.

Sincerely yours,
Tim Leatherman

P.S.  There is an inaccuracy in your letter.  I have not financially supported the Kerry/Edwards campaign.

"I have not financially supported the Kerry/Edwards campaign."

Man, is that a Clintonesque answer or what? Did he endorse Kerry?

Fuck him and his products (and too bad his employees will have to pay with their jobs for the boss being a political activist)

DAMN IT.  I really like my Leatherman, too.  I've kept it on my belt every shift on duty (I'm an EMT) and  have used it at least once per shift (usually more).  For the kind of tool, IMHO, there aren't too many good substitutes, but I hope there are some that will be close.  As much as I like mine, I can't see parting with anymore of my hard earned money for another one.  Luckily, I've never bought anything else on that list.  It seems to be just a bunch of hippie tree-hugger crap anyhow; hell, I've never heard of like half of them.  Companies need to just shut up and make their stuff well.

To Whom it may Concern,

I have bought more than one Leatherman product every year for over ten years.  I absolutely love your classic Leatherman tool.  While you and other companies make their multi tolls more complex, the classic with its rugged simplicity has always appealed to me.  One Christmas I gave one to every male on my list.  I work in a retail store that sells Leatherman as well as Gerber, Victorinox and SOG multitools.  This year is was going to be the Micra for males and females.

Now it will be SOG tools.  I will no longer purchase Leatherman tools for myself, for my friends and family, or recommend them to my customers.  Why? Because your company has chosen to support John Kerry for president.  Your president and several “sporting goods” companies signed a letter supporting him.  I don’t imagine how he could have done this, support a man like Senator Kerry.  Senator Kerry has consistently voted against the rights of outdoor sportsmen and you support him.

I don’t understand how companies such as Leatherman feel they have the position to “put their weight” behind political campaigns.  It is not your place, perhaps if more persons, like myself, vote with their wallets, you will see the error of your ways.

Sincerely,

xxxxxxxxxxx

When Leatherman signed his name as "President" of his company, he is speaking not as an individual, but FOR his company. (Which is blisteringly stupid and flat out wrong)

Only an arrogant ass would have the nerve to sign his corporate title on a political endorsement, It IMPLIES corporate endorsement.

I'll bet there are a fewBush supporters working for all the above companies that have to keep their mouths shut (lest they fall out of favour and be first to go during the next round of rightsizing)

If you buy any of the products from any of the companies listed above (as I have in the past, unfortunately) you can damn well bet that a good chunk of YOUR MONEY went to these bigwigs and on to support Kerry.

NO MORE.

Print the list out so you always remember who to avoid when shopping for outdoor gear. There are plenty of alternatives to the above list.

(and write them and let them know that because their owners & marketing VP's decided to play politics with their companies, that it may will cost them their bonuses and very possibly their jobs)

Corporate bigwigs should stick to business and STFU about politics.

Tim Leatherman is as big an asshole as Natalie Maines. I hope the douchebag reads this thread and thinks about the situation he has put his employees in because he can't separate his personal affairs from business. Narcissistic jerk.

Hello:

I have owned your product for years. During my military service a blued leatherman took rode on my hip, one that I bought myself and still have.

Early this year I purchased one of your new purple tools for my wife to use around the house. I was also going to buy another one of your more manly tools and keep one leatherman in each car in addition to the one in the house.

I just learned that your company and its owner are supporting John Kerry openly and publicly. You have lost a customer. I just went to the Gerber site and picked out the model I will buy after work tomorrow. Your company and Tim Leatherman have spit in the face of every owner who first bought his product while in the service. I will not buy from you again. I will tell my friends not to buy from you again.

Don't destroy it, sell it on eBay (it will cost Leatherman the sale of a new one) and then buy a  Gerber or SOG, or send the proceeds to the Bush campaign.

I think it makes perfect sense for leatherman to back kerry. If you listened to the debates last night kerry apparently wants to "screen the cargo on the plane as well as the carry on luggage". I would say that means more multi tools will be confiscated and sold by the airports on ebay. So, Leatherman will se a sales increase.

It all makes sense

I have seen an e-mail reply Mr. Leatherman made to someone named "Bart".  I will address several points he raised.

"I have received several e-mails very similar to yours. I assume you and the others have been requested by someone else to write them. Is this correct?"
It is not correct.  Word gets around, and Mr. Leatherman's endorsement (personal or corporate makes little difference) is foolish.  I don't need a politician to tell me whether I should be upset by this.

"I don't agree with everything Kerry and Edwards propose..."
I would like to know why, if Mr. Leatherman was willing to say this, he was just as willing to put has name behind Kerry and Edwards.

"I'm not trying to alienate customers."
No other result is likely.  Surely Mr, Leatherman knew this.

"I have over 300 people working here in my Portland factory. Four years ago I had more. I'd like to at least keep my current employees employed and preferably add more."
Mr. Leatherman will not achieve this goal by upsetting his customers over his (otherwise private) political stances.

"Maybe I wasn't very smart to give my job title and business affiliation when I gave my endorsement, rather than to do it personally, but I did. If it costs me business, so be it."
Unless Mr. Leatherman publicly withdraws his endorsement, it will cost him my business, I will never buy or recommend a Leatherman tool again, and at my first opportunity, I will grind off the Leatherman markings on my Wave.  I'm certain this will void the warranty.  "So be it."

Sincerely,

[Brisk322]
