So, 200 people's phones are in an impound box waiting to be auctioned or destroyed.

I am ok with Apple not giving any information..

They weren't trying very hard; most iPhones have the serial number printed right on them, and all of them have the IMEI number printed on them.

Why on Earth would they help recover lost used phones when they can SELL NEW replacements?  All about the $$ with APL.

IMEI may be on there, but Apple wants the serial number to find the owner. Not every Iphone has a Sim, so there is not a serial number on the SIM slot.

I agree with one of the other posters, as Apple just wanted to sell more and they would have nothing to gain by helping.

I know there are tons of threads but traveling these last few days it's all I overhear in conversations.  With the younger generations saying hell no. Privacy.

Older parents are tossing out the "well what if we can stop an an imminent attack by getting data off that phone?  What if that planned attack was on us?  Wouldn't you want our government to have that Intel and respond?"

The under 35 crowd is still resounding hell no. Repubs should key in on this.  Older folks think it's just about the one phone and not the implications. Educate people. I did. Changed some minds of folks I didn't even know.

Edit
Public perception battle lines are being drawn and manipulated. Hell they did this same kinda scare tactic on terrorist using embedded comm in images after 9/11 if you remember.  I was so pissed off at the parents trying to preach "don't you trust the government to protect you?"  Then the young kids age 12-25 say fuck no.  Lines are being drawn.

There's actually a point there. If Apple didn't provide the info, the owner would likely just go buy a new iPhone. Win for Apple! If the owner cared at all, they'd use the "Where's my Phone" app.  Probably they're happier to have a new shiny phone.  Go figure.

Nice that you care enough to try though.

Mark my words. This will become a huge election battle line that will swing independent and under 40 votes. The timing is impeccable. I shit you not that's all I hear in passing conversation of folks. I tell it like it is though, not just on a forum. This will go to the Supreme Court. Right around election time would be my guess. This is a single issue vote to get, and like pot it will drive them to the polls.

I'm not an Apple fan, but I support them on this. I think it's totally fucked up that the .gov(fbi) would pursue this matter in court, IMO it's just another sign of overreaching .gov rubbing their reach in the faces of Americans, they will get a favorable decision and Apple will capitulate.  My question is with all of the sneaky unethical shit the .gov does, why didn't they just reach out to some of these hacker punks, either recruit a few and put them in the .gov payroll or just drop 10k in an account for a few of these hacker punks to unlock the phones.

Just wait until every other federal agency takes note and figures out how they can get a judge to order innocent and uninvolved 3rd party companies to do their bidding via the All Writs Act.  They're cool with it now, but when the EPA, OSHA, the EEOC, HUD, BATFE, and the IRS start abusing the AWA in the same manner as the FBI the screaming on Breitbart will be epic.

Why don't all smart phone companies display the owner's driver's license/identification info on the lock screen?

ETA: Looks like I may have misread the post.

I had over 200 phones, and all were stolen. We figured out who the other 200 belonged to, but the last 200 were locked. All I wanted them to do was determine the serial number and let APPLE contact the owners. They refused to even assist.

So, 200 people's phones are in an impound box waiting to be auctioned or destroyed.

My phone says "If found call (xxx) xxx-xxxx (my wife's cell number) for reward." on the lock screen.

Seems like the geniuses at Apple could implement that functionality, too. Oh, wait, they did. I guess the phone owners didn't want their shit back, afterall.

Fappening happened because people set up their phone to store all their shit in the cloud.  Simple solution is to just not do that.  None of my shit is stored in iCloud.

Ya...BUT TERRORISM AND SHIT!!

The fastest way to trash the constitution is to provide people with a false sense of security.

Believing that anything that you put on your iPhone is secure is ridiculous.  Have you heard of the fappening?

Not entirely. It happened because Apple defaults to iCloud storage, didn't implement the most rudimentary of security policies on the iCloud portal login page AND a bunch of dumb ass celebs fell for some pretty basic social engineering tactics.

Plenty of blame to go around.

I wonder if China asked Apple to unlock the p\iPhone of a Chinese citizen would Apple put up as big a fight?  Or would they roll over for their Chines masters and have the phone unlocked quicker than it takes to get one set up at the iPhone store?

I don't see what this has to do with China.   You're inserting a hypothetical where there are plenty of real-world examples to currently draw from.  9 so far.

Every GOP presidential candidate got their pussy wet at the thought of Apple of complying and bending over. Chump has said that he'll lead a boycott against Apple, if they don't comply.

I wish more people cared about the 4th amendment. I wish the EFF had more lobbying power.

This might make it to the ninth circuit by the time of the election, but probably not.  There's no conceivable way it could get to SCOTUS by then.

You're most likely correct but I can see a big issue being made about it.  It's still being pushed in the news and folks minds...still.

It's too complicated.  It won't be a big issue.
