Ridgeback disagrees. Has a longer lifespan and is just an awesome dog.

We've had GSD's, Golden's, Lab's, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Beagle, Pomeranian, Poodles, Doberman, American Samoyed's, all kinds of Mutts (we have 4 GSD/Lab mix rescues right now).
They have all been the best breed ever. I miss them all. |

Love our GSD. Got him when he was 8 months old. But boy does he have separation anxiety, and does not like strangers.

I am a big time Lab man. I’m an avid bird hunter, and they fit my needs perfectly, but YMMV.
I do like GSDs too, though. |

I thought the same thing OP, until a Rottweiler chose me as a companion. By far the best girl I've ever shared a home with, including humans.

Not a huge fan. Nice dogs but not for me. I usually have mutts but if I were to gst another pure breed it would be a Cracker Cur or Black Mouth Cur. Super loyal extremely good with friends and relatives unlike some GSDs that seem to only be friendly with a small circle. Not all, but some I have seen GSDs like that. And Curs are insanely defensive and ferocious. They arent afraid of a damn thing. Fuckers will go after a lion.
GSDs are nice and IMHO they seem to have common themes among the different colors. Black ones seen to be the best. Light tan ones a bit skittish. If I were to get one it would be a black one |

Our Burmese / Shepard mix is a pretty great dog. Except for the hair. Lots and LOTS of hair.
Everywhere. Attached File And he’s easily (5) times the size he was in this picture |

If you could train one to point birds, and fetch them when I shoot one, I could maybe go along with your premise.
Then make them do that for a couple hours in shitty weather. And maybe duck's too, if I ever decide to get up at 4am again. Until then, no substitutes; Attached File Attached File |

Notorious for shedding and easily get stinky. Can have shorter life as a bigger dog. Overbred and this prone to certain issues. Powerful, not necessarily good for older people.
Good dogs. I’ll give some good ear scritches any time. Won’t own one. Preferred dogs for some. No such thing as best. |

My best dog was a lab/GSD mix.
I currently have a Czech WL GSD and she is higher maintenance. Still a great dog, though. |

GSDs are great but the hair is a lot for in the house. Our Anatolian Shepherd is absolutely fantastic and has saved me from having to patrol the farm in the night. She's also extremely gentle with our toddler.
Poodle and airedale for inside dogs is the way to go. Attached File |

The DS is more serious and always switched on if she’s awake. They’re both good dogs, but my Mal is more engaging and looks to make me happy. The DS is more of a weapon. I told a guy that my 80+ pound would put someone in the hospital, but the 60 pound DS would put you in the morgue. |

Quoted: I've had 5 GSDs, and I know I'm gonna get roasted over this, but my Poodle, yes a French Poodle, was my best friend, my best protector and my smartest dog ever. I miss him every day. Forgot to mention that Poodles don't SHED HAIR. View Quote No roasting... I never thought I would own a standard poodle. Ours is the best dog ever. Incredibly smart and well behaved, required almost no training to "get it" when it comes to obedience and manners, gets along great with kids and our cats even love him. And yeah, no shedding. Trim his hair every few months and he's good to go. He sits patiently while I do it. |

The best bread all depends on the reason you own a dog. GSDs, Labs, Chihuahuas, Black Mouth Curs, and Shelties all serve to fulfill different needs.
If you live in an apartment, a GSD would be an undesirable pet. |
|
Yeah a bunch probably. In my experience I'd say the average BMC is probably a better dog than the average GSD, depending on your requirements.
Also GSD's seem to be the dog people buy because they have a statement to make about the person they wish they were, but are just smart enough to not get a rescue Pit. |

GWP. Most shepherd lines are a genetic cesspool. Worked at a vet hospital. We made bank on shepherds. Big bank. Hips are garbage.

GSD is a great breed. Due to hair and falling in love with them, we are a Doberman family.

My Mal has an "on/off" switch which is nice. She is very affectionate too. Just don't mess with her peeps or property unless you want 60lbs of pure muscle fury latched onto you. |
