I bought my wife a Mercedes last year.  When I was going over the car with the salesman I noticed the front license plate bracket in the trunk.  I asked if he was going to install it.  He said he would if I wanted, but nobody puts it on.  I left it off and haven't had any issues with the cops.  I live in CT.

Hello neighbor. Same experience, but haven't been pulled over in almost a decade. In fact I've never been pulled over in CT. I get the distinct impression that you really need to be asking for it for cops to care aroundhere. Granted I don't weave in and out of lanes, am a blinker fanatic, and my tints are only 35%?, but still.

I know it gives them an easy reason to pull you over, but I dont do drugs or keep illegal shit in my car so I don't really care. I think with BPD you'd need to be driving a clapped out Altima or gun down a crowd of stoop sitters to warrant their attention, as it should be.

I got pulled over by CHP for not having one.  I had his day shift partner (one of my best buddies) sign the ticket off.

I'm sorry, but I'm not drilling holes in a bumper not intended for a plate. My truck, on the other hand, has a plate.

If you get pulled over for no front plate it is either quota time or you look suspicious and they need an excuse.

I have never been pulled over for no front plate.  I have been pulled over a few times over the years.  3 times in one day even, and nobody said anything about my front plate.  My seatbelt latch was broken and I got pulled over by everyone from state patrol to town cop.  No tickets.  But when it rains, it pours!

Some people use a bracket that mounts under the front and you can pull the license plate out from under and up but not drill into the front of the vehicle. That way the plate shows and it you don't want it to show you can push it back under. Probably even an electric version of it

Glad my state doesn't require them.

Been driving in Dallas since 99 without front plates.
No tickets so far, at least no tickets for the missing plate.
Only occasionally drive like an ass.

They must not care, as my luck is not good enough to cover this.

Here in Idaho they put them in the front window.  Then some cops like my buddy pull them over for obscured plate.  Total fishing expedition but small town cops gonna small town cop.

Ironically we had a state rep by a car last year with no place for a front plate. He sponsored a bill to remove the two plate requirement but it was shot down lol.

Yes. And the answer is simple. They don't put on the plate and they "get away with it" Bec nobody cares.

For the same reason I have had 5% tint on my windows since 2005, I don't care and apparently the police do not care enough to pull me over for it.

Also as another point of data none of my vehicles have a front license plate installed, even though the law requires it. Never been stopped for it either.

My state requires a front plate on your vehicle.  Once in highschool I rebuilt an old corvette, and I didn't want to screw up the front with holes for a plate mount...so I drove it without one at first. It took about 2 months before I got pulled over and ticketed for not having a front place.  Fast forward 15 years, and bought a newer pickup truck that didn't come with a front plate....I got lazy, never put one on it...a few months later...pulled over for no front plate. A few years after that, I bought a nice sports car that didn't have a front plate, and the special front mount I needed was over $100....so you guessed it, I drove it without a front plate...and about 6 months later got pulled over. Needless to say, my state requires a front plate....and LEO's enforce it...like they should.

That bring up my question......I always see people in really expensive Range Rovers, Audi's, BMW's, Porches, and Mercedes driving around with no front plates on......how do they get away with it?  Does LEO not both pulling them over because they know they have a lawyer that will make the ticket go away? Or do they get ticketed for it, and just not care?

....just wondering.

The answer is obvious- what makes you think they get away with it?  They just haven't been pulled over yet, exactly the way you have a good six month run before getting puled over.

I can't speak for cops but I'd think they would prefer to ticket expensive cars.  The cop giving the ticket knows the owner make more than they do.

Front plateless for over 25 years in California.

I think I have been cited for it twice. Both times I was stopped for something else but just cited for the plate.
I look at it this way, the front plate is a loss leader. It gives them something minor to write me for when I do something worse (like speeding).

That said, I have gotten a couple of speeding tickets over the years but never speeding and no front plate at the same time.

I don't drink and drive, don't do drugs, don't have dead hookers in the car and I almost never have firearms in my trucks. We take the girlfriend's car when we go to the range. It blends in a lot better, doesn't have tinted windows and has a front plate.
Yes, you have to look at transporting firearms like you are doing something illegal in California..... Since you become a 4th waver when you have guns on you, that is how you have to look at it.
Sad.

Depends on the cops in your area. A front plate is required in Oregon. I drove around in my little Mazda for a couple of years without one before a cop finally pulled me over for it. He asked why I didn't have one. I explained that the person I bought the car from had a little fender bender and the plate mounting bracket was ripped off so there was no way to mount one. He said "Okay, no problem. Don't worry about it then." So I didn't.

A year later another cop pulled me over for it in the same part of town. I explained to him what the previous cop told me. He said "Nope, that's wrong. You gotta put it on there. Doesn't matter if you have to use zip ties, but it has to be on there." So I used zip ties and now it's legal and they haven't bothered me about it since.

I have not had a front license plate on my cars for 30 years.  I started doing this because I had fancy cars and I didnt like the look of it.......now I have a beat up Jeep and just don't give a shit.  The cops do not give a shit either, in Cali.

I do accept the fact that, at any given time a cop does have reason to pull me over because of that.......I don't give a shit.  Pull me over.

By the way.......I have received a few tickets in that time frame.......never has the cop said a damn thing.

Either that, or it's because CT is so chock full of "the gov't wants to control you" laws  from forbidding motorists from passing people while on right lane to requiring people to wear shoes while driving, so it's easy for the cops to forget there's a law.

CT had only one plate for a while, but the cops bitched and moaned, and held their breath until all their faces turned purple and they went back to two.

I guess they need that front plate for criminals who are escaping from the scene of a crime by backing up.

I bet proximity to states that do not require (nor even issue) a front plate, has something to do with it. If a cop sees you in his rearview and sees no plate, he likely assumes you're from AZ. Sure, maybe eventually you pass the cop, and he see's your from CA... but by then he may have either forgotten... or simply he doesn't give a damn.

Drove my Corvette for years, both in CA and for 3 years I lived in TX, with no front plate.  Got pulled over once in the middle of nowhere on a back road in west TX for not having a front plate, and when I told the officer that there's just a cover velcro-ed on and I could take it off real quick, he said "nah, not a big deal."  Gave me a warning and let me go, I think he just wanted to check out the car.

Your experience getting pulled over multiple times for no front plate just tells me that you live in a state or local area where they actually care about it, but everywhere I've ever been it's not an issue at all.

I did not have one on the front of either Ferrari, I was ticketed for it while nailed for speeding.
Went to court and told the judge I was not drilling holes in a bumper that costs several thousand dollars.
He dismissed the ticket and I got off on the speed as well, thanks Peggy. Going across NYC bridges and through
the tunnels is where the NYPD and MTA would bust balls.

Bought an Infiniti from a dealer and they did not have a front mount for the plate in stock, so they had it on order.
I told them as I left the lot if I get a ticket they were eating it. A few days later I got pulled over for speeding, the officer
let me off on the speed, but wrote me for no front plate. He did this despite the fact I showed him that I just bought the car
and told him what happened at the dealer. I postponed my court date and never heard a word about it again, I assumed
the judge kicked it. A couple of years later I get a letter from the DMV that they were suspending my license. I call the local
court with a WTF and they admitted something fell through the cracks. I spoke with the local ADA and she said take a picture
with plate on and she will fix it, so I taped the plate to the bumper and sent it in, ticket dismissed. I pulled the tape off and
continued to drive without a a front plate until I sold it.

My state requires a front plate, but the adjoining one does not. Do the people from the adjoining state pose some type of danger to
the people in my state or to the police for not having one, of course not because it is all BS.

I've never run a front plate since 1990 when I got my license until this year.

I always ran a tinted rear cover and no front plate.  In the past 2 years I've been pulled over 10 times for plates.  All fishing expeditions by the PoPo.  I drive a stock White Acura MDX.

I got tired of getting harassed so I put the plate on and took the cover off.

When I did get pulled over I was always asked where I'm going, what I'm doing, etc.  Just handed them my license and CHL and stayed silent.  Was always let go with a warning

The officer observing the lack of a front plate must be in a position passing that vehicle to be able to discern that the rear plate is for his state if that state requires a front plate.   And if not for his state, does the state that issued the rear plate require a front plate?  In summary, noticing no front plate creates a slight hassle that is normally not worth it if no other infraction is taking place.   That said, small towns and burgs look for that as a source of revenue.  In most places it simply isn't worth the time.

Every few years the highway patrol will do a push and pull people over for it.  Otherwise it's just to get stats or if you need to get into the car.

Recently, the law changed where unless you can prove that the particular vehicle came off the line with holes to attach the plate, you can't pull them over.

That's how it is here.  My fiance doesn't believe me that a front plate is required by law, even after I read her the statute.  She has never had a front plate in 17 years of driving.  I've only ever heard of one person getting pulled over for it.

CSB - it was the wife of a friend of mine.  She was pulled over by the highway patrol.  She said she never received a front plate.  The cop checked the back plate and both plates were screwed in there, just stuck together as they frequently are when they arrive.  Then he realized - hey, this lady used to be on my paper route as a kid and she was a generous tipper.  He let her off without even a warning other than to have her husband install the plates correctly.  Moral of the story:  tip your paper boy!

My wife bought a sports car without the license plate bracket on the front so she just keeps the front plate inside the car. A cop friend told her if she ever gets pulled over for it, she can just say the car didn't come with the bracket and she's waiting on a part. Show them the plate and it's all good.

She's never been pulled over for it.

I can understand both sides of that coin. I'm a car guy, I think front plates are hideous and I detest having to drill holes in a brand new bumper.

I do however, like to use the lack of a front plate as PC for a stop. That being said, I've only written the actual ticket as my PC ticket when I find drugs in a vehicle. If you're valid, I send you on your way.

No one cares. In Denver it isn't a moving violation so they don't pull you over for it. If you park in the uppity liberal places like cherry creek or downtown the metermaids will give you a ticket, if you get pulled over for speeding it's an addon to your speeding ticket.
Meter maids don't go into private property so they don't catch you in suburbia or privately owned parking garages.
I asked my local Porsche dealer, and there they all say the $100 ticket is the cost of driving a Porsche. The ticket at $100 isn't big enough for a guy who drives a $100K sports car to really care. They also don't want to drill into their bumper, it could ruin the resale of their car. I went riding dirty without the front license plate for about 6 months because I didn't think I was going to stay very long and I didn't want holes in my bumper when I move back to a freer state.   When I realized I may never leave I let the dealer drill the holes. The front license plate may interfere with some technology like parking sensors and dynamic cruise control, technology common on expensive luxury cars.  There also isn't a lot of real estate on the bumper of a 911 too.

I see cars rich and poor leave the license plate on the dashboard and that seems to suffice as well.

The no front license plate ticket is about $100, and a lawyer may cost $300. It's also a non moving violation so it can't raise your insurance cost.
