German Maxim MG-08 with the Schlitten (sledge) mount and sight.  Probably used to kill more people than any machine gun in history.

Second choice is the lightened version, the MG-08/15.

Thompson Submachine gun is always a favorite.

What you said, and the M-60 is much easier to carry, and every rifleman carrys his shit plus a belted 60 batch just for you(because you are so ready to party)!

And oh yawh the M-60 is just the best clone of all those other German guns you guys mentioned!   But the Ma -Duece is unchanged and will be such for a long time

My choice:

The M-16 (or a RR AR)!

No, not because 'this is AR15.com', but...

How else can you get a full-length rifle, submachinegun, pistol (in the vein of the H&K MP5K or the 'pistol UZI'), and even a LMG (24" barrell and bipod, with either mag or belt feed) all off one gun, and in your choice of caliber? If only there was a 'shotgun upper', it would be 'the universal gun'...

As for other comments:

1) A 12.7mm gun is essentially a 50cal...

2) That MP44 reminds me of an AK... Oh well, the Russians have allways had a nack for copying other peoples weapons...

3) IIRC, there is really no 'production' man-portable GE Minigun... There were a few that were CUSTOM MADE for use in various movies (Predator, Terminator 2), but they were never mass produced (mainly due to the tremendous amount of power needed to operate them. The guy in Predator had a 220VAC electric line running from the gun down through his fatigues, and out his pantleg. Not very practical for military use). And both were 5.56mm 'shrunk versions'. The actual minigun is, of course, 7.62mm (getting the term 'minigun' from being a 'miniature' version of the original Vulcan 20mm cannon)...

The power issue is also why downed helo aircrews in Somolia and Afganhistan could not use the door-mount miniguns after going down: without the engines running to turn the onboard generators, the miniguns couldn't shoot...

I'll take one of each...

Vektor Mini-SS

Vektor SS77

Caliber 7.62mm NATO for SS77 & 5.56mm NATO for Mini-SS
Weight 9,6 kg on bipod (8.26 kg in Mini-SS configuration)
Length 1155 mm (1000 mm Mini-SS)
Length of barrel 550 mm (515 mm Mini-SS)
Rate of fire 600-900 rounds per minute

Due to international sanctions against the Apartheide regime of South Africa, the South African Army had several need to develop small arms by itself, so, in the 1977, the development of the new universal machine gun had begun. The issue of the new MG began in 1986, and it was named SS-77 (SS for the designers - Smith and Soregi, and 77 - for the year the development began).

The SS-77 is a gas operated, belt feed weapon that fires from open bolt and has breech block swinging sideways to lock into the receiver wall. It had quick changeable barrel with external longitudal flutes to reduce weight and improve cooling. The SS-77 was developed to fire 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition, but when need for smaller caliber MG was recognised, the Mini-SS kits were developed in 1994 to convert any SS-77 to fire 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition. These kits consist of new barrel, bolt, gas piston, feed cover and some other small parts, and with these kits the SS could be converted from one chambering to another in the matter of minutes.

It should be noted that according to some experts the SS-77 is one of the words best universal machinegus, along with Belgian MAG-58, Russian PKM and German MG-3.
