This is what I am using at the moment. I didn't have the patience to sit in front of my computer as use Rosetta Stone, but learning while I drive is much more tolerable. My girlfriend is from Mexico and I practice what I learn with her and she corrects me on how she actually speaks versus how Pimsleur teaches you. Pimsleur is very formal Spanish, where as most Spanish that is spoken by people in this part of the country is very, slang-y, best way I can describe it anyway. My girl always says to learn it the formal way, but she never speaks Spanish like that. Usted versus Tu and so forth. Just finished the first set of lessons and I can already understand the Mexicans at my work much better. I always thought the Mexicans that didn't speak English very well just didn't know English much, but now I am realizing they speak Spanish the same way they speak English, very poorly. My girlfriend didn't speak English until she was in the 3rd grade, but if you speak with her now, you would never know English is her second language.

Pimsleur
Flash Cards for Vocabulary
Flash Cards for Phrases
And this book

All of those will help you immensely.

Good luck, I am only a few months ahead of you.

The trouble with learning Spanish from the people you see everyday is that you could end up speaking like the Mexican version of a "homie"; all common vernacular, and little polished vocabulary.

Friend did that very same thing.  He still no hablo espanol.

Just don't do as my classmates who went to a local messican rest-traunt and ordered, "Tay-coes, Burr-Rit-toes, chai-me-chang-gas."  They did their best to butcher the language and got a, "Really guys?" from the order taker.

Spanishdict.com is free and easy.  The chick in the videos is a white American from Georgia and her manner of speech is very easy to understand.  Since she is not Hispanic, her speech is accent free and simple.  Did I mention she is pretty cute!

I would recommend Pimsleur for speaking and Duolingo for reading/writing.

After going through the Pimsleur and Duolingo French lessons, Spanish is coming to me pretty easy because it's another Romance language.

I can now read most French text, and understand about half of what is said in French language Youtube videos using just Pimsleur and Duolingo.

I live in South TX with a Spanish speaking family, girlfriend and daughter speak Spanish, I  work in cement and civil work, so there's a little Spanish Spoken at work too.

 Been here all my life.

Don't understand shit.  Some people just don't have the ability to know two languages.

Work in a kitchen, date a Latina, and practice that shit. I come across people who want to learn Spanish, but won't even try to talk with a native-speaker. WTF?

My favorite phrase is "No me chingues!", "Don't fuck with me!" or "You're joking!"

took it in high school and in college
at best I know how to explain what I want or need
I can understand Spanish if it is spoken very very very slowly

Spanish is very "slang" like as mentioned above
proper spanish will get you laughed at

learned lots of good slang from coworkers years ago
none of it could be said in a church

I find it funny that people say "move to Texas" as if its a recent occurrence that people speak Spanish here.

Uummm, this used to be Mexico, people. Residents have been speaking Spanish here long before English speaking Europeans arrived.

Mexicans don't take kitchen jobs because they're uneducated. They take kitchen jobs because a lot of restaurants don't have very good eyesight when it comes to examining documents. Intelligence and education isn't necessarily lacking among Latinos in restaurants--but legal status to work often is. Of course, there is a wide range in the quality of Latino cooks--there are some dumb and uneducated ones, but there are dumb and uneducated American cooks too.

My restaurant has a couple of bright, decently-educated (no higher education, but mostly-competent secondary education) Mexican cooks. They're here because it was too dangerous for them at home. One owned several small businesses and kept getting robbed. Another grew up in D.F. and got the fuck out as soon as he turned 18.

I took six years of Spanish classes in school, and was pretty good at it by the time I graduated. But it didn't get fluent until I worked with them every day. The only downside is that I probably say "pinche" too much for a professional setting--but I say "fuck" too much in English too.
