It's been confirmed that my crew and I are getting our bonuses. Second quarter bonuses comes out to roughly three grand per person. So, I'm thinking either a M1A or a Remington 700 or a FAL. What do you folks think?

Seeing how you live in California..I recommend that you get an M1A

I toyed with buying a M1A1 due to my shooting them in the Marine Corps. After hanging in here I opted out & bought an AR-10. Best GD rifle I ever bought, perhaps excluding my AR-15.

You can buy many types of .308 rifles but you cannot buy a more accurate one than the AR-10.

Note: under California Law.
Possession or Ownership of ANY AR type or AK type receiver which has NOT been registered prior to 2000 is a FELONY.

As for other rifles..he can get a FAL or an HK type rifle but ONLY if it does NOT have either a PISTOL GRIP OR THUMBHOLE grip.

Which makes shooting a FAL or HK something of an awkward proposition.

With 3k you should be able to fully deck out a Remington 700.

But as others may have pointed out, the M1A has a limited lifespan in the PRK.  The Rem 700 is further down on their gun ban agenda.

Hell, I got a Rem700(P) many moons ago and I didn't even outfit it with a scope yet!

So I'll have to side with what I know the majority suggests and that's gotta be the M1A.

John, didn't we just have this discussion?

Of your choices, I like semiauto.

Of the semis, only the M1A can be had here in unneutered form.  FALS sans pgs or with fixed 10 rounders versus a rifle that takes detetch 20s and has excellent iron sights.

The 700's nice, too, and you should be able to get BOTH a 700 and a nice scope AND an M1A for $3000.

Yes, we had this discussion, but I wasn't sure if I would get my bonus. Now that I'm sure, I'll probably jump in and purchase something within the next couple of days.
I can't use the entire 3k for guns. I have to keep the little lady happy also. [:D] We're going to Vegas for a week and we're staying at the MGM Grand. I want to spoil her a little.

From a previous post...
The best comparison for .308 battle rifles & carbines can be found in Boston T. Party's "Boston's Gun Bible", March 1998 edition,Chapter 10 - a full 33 pages of comparisons of .308 rifles including individual ratings on 35 distinct characteristics. Excluding price, brass reloadability, parts availability, parts price, mag availability, & mag price (which have nothing to do with the functionality of the rifle itself), The AR-10 came out on top of the M14, FAL, H&K91 & GALIL.
Including all those other things, it was second only because of a late 90's parts availability & mag price issue at Armalite that's been corrected.

Anyway the Boston's book (available from Amazon.com or Javalin Press) with 45 chapters covering The Basics, Combat Rifles, Guns in General, Acquisition, Disarmament, & Courage is worth more than double it's cost - bought 5: sold 2, gave 2 away, and kept one for reference.
