Looks good, there are better air coolers out there if you plan on overclocking. I would have gone with ATI myself as far as graphics go.

I think Crysis is the #1 reason for system upgrades. It was my reason for going to dual video and a quad core processor as well.
Call of Duty 4 runs at a smooth 150frames/sec now, compared to 50-60 with a single 8800GT and a AMD 6400+ X2 |

By the end of the year I want to have a raid 0 setup with 10,000 rpm raptors or if the SSD drives are cheaper and better I will go with them. Don't bother, raid some WD 500GB Black's and get an SSD or two and OC that quadcore. You know you want water cooling. |

Nice rig.
Overkill for me but nice. ETA: put Debian Stable x64 on it and rock on |

Now there's a blast from the past. Is that a 755? Its been a while, but I used to work on those. |

Cool.
I need a new computer now. I'll probably do something similar. Trying to think whether or not to SLI the newer graphics cards. I'll have to see some benchmarks of a game like crysis before I make a decision, but I'm wondering if I only get one brand spanking new card, and a decent processor, by the time the games require a better processor I'll have to replace the GPU anyway. Should I just SLI now then pray to God that in few years when I need a new CPU, they still make them in my pin factor so I don't also have to buy a new mobo. Semi-related: Haven't checked with larger manufacturers on their prices for comparable systems, but if you're interested in building your own computer, now is the time to do it. I've never seen components priced so low, EVER. I can make a pretty decent desktop (no/free OS, not really much of a gaming system, but it could probably do most of the recent games) for about $300 minus peripherals. |

If you don't mind me asking about how much did that set you back? I'm thinking of updating my desktop but I'm not sure if it's worth the money. Would like something powerful and near the cutting-edge but not beyond the point of diminishing return. Case was $120 processor was $180 Board was $160 power supply was $124(great deal at xmas time) Ram was $100 hard drive was $67 cooler was $59 Dvd drive was $25 About the same for graphics I'm guessing? I know you probably had those before, but if you didn't would I be in the ballpark? |

Go with a Raid 0 setup for your OS/games and a big third drive for bulk file storage for speed. Solid state is insanely overpriced atm. To OP: why not go with the new Intel chip instead of the 6600? |

quick question, what can I do to lessen the noise of the fan built onto my graphics card? ETA: second question, can you explain setting up the dual boot option to Vista or Ubuntu? I might pursue this tonight. I can help on the second if it hasn't been answered yet. You just install Windows first, and Ubuntu takes care of the rest. It installs GRUB, the Grand Unified Boot Loader. You know that screen when you press F8 before the Windows loading screen comes up? That's the boot loader Windows uses. GRUB sort of replaces it. |

quick question, what can I do to lessen the noise of the fan built onto my graphics card? Using anti-static protections, you can either clean it out and hope that helps, or you can purchase another cooling solution. Unfortunately this is a common problem. I tend to look for passive cooling on graphics cards and board chipsets... because fans get loud, period. You can go with watercooling, air cooling, or passive cooling, as all options exist in the aftermarket... but it really depends on what card you have, as "universal" mounting options aren't nearly "universal", and it also depends how much heat your GPU unit throws and what method/product is suitable for it. In other words, you've gotta do some forum research on your particular card. There are software progs like rivatuner, etc available for both Nvidia and ATI that will control your fan speed. "May void the warranty though." |

You put that much cash into a computer and didn't do a RAID setup, or get HDs bigger than 500gb?

Holly shit dude that is my laptop. Where did you find that picture. That is so funny. That is an old IBM with windows 95 that a guy gave me. It was $8000 or something brand new. |

The graphics cards were $199 each from newegg.com(no tax or shipping charge). I would say that in my case I was better off with two cards in SLI instead of one single dual GPU that I had to pay $500 for. I plan on getting more hard drives. I just haven't figured out the setup I want. The SSD drives that are out now are going to come down in price and they will do a better job of not slowing down in the future. For now I will stick with 10,000 rpm WD that have a 5 year warranty. The reason for the large case if to be able to run a watercooling setup in the future. I can remove the top fan and put a radiator right inside at the top. I just loved the Military style of the case. As far as buying guns instead of this computer, I say why not buy both. I already own 4 pistols and 2 AR-15s.
http://www.newegg.com/ For dual booting ubuntu go to the link below. Or just type how to dual boot xp/vista with ubuntu. http://www.ubuntu.com/ I love Asus motherboards but this time I went with the EVGA because it was a great choice for overclocking. EVGA has a 24/7 support line and lifetime warranty. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130434 |

Nice, I have that exact same setup, almost. My mobo is an XFX750i, proccessor is the same, but only have one graphics card. When I save up a few hundred more bucks, I am going to fill up the other 2 graphics card slots, new power supply and 6 more gigs of RAM.

So what's up with putting the powersupply on the bottom of the case?
I've never done it that, or seen it done that way, but every pic in this thread is that way. Is there some sort of heat or noise management benefit? |

Is there some sort of heat or noise management benefit? Newer cases are coming that way as they have vent fans on top. Also helps keep wire management, also keeps the Power Supply a bit cooler, as you are not sucking heated CPU and NB air through it. |

I stopped playing 3D games about 5 years ago. I don't know why, it just sort of lost it's zeal for me. I've spent next to nothing on computers ever since!!! It's killing my son, who wants all the latest video games and a high-end PC to play them on... I just keep telling him to save up his money
Of course, right now he's saving up money to pay for the upper I put on order for his rifle, so it's gonna be a while before he has the dough for a computer! EDIT: And it also kills him that I've got a QC Extreme processor sitting in my dresser, with nothing to run it on... funny, I just don't care anymore... |

I admit to know near nothing about building computers, but at my father's metal fabrication shop we made a case for a guy who is SERIOUS about his computers.
We made him an aluminum rack that was 18" front to back and about 3' wide x 5' tall. He uses methanol and compressors to cool it. He still brings in parts every month or so and wants small parts made to have better ways of stacking and racking it all. All types of radiator looking parts and whatnot. When he talks about what it can do I just get lost. He actually can't get it done because of the way something is always better coming out and he changes his plans constantly. Apparently people sorta drag race these things by making them crunch massive data and see who gets the fastest time. He must be an insane person. |
