Most of my AKs are Arsenal guns, but if I could go back to do it all over I would just get a couple of "certified" WASR-10s from Henderson Defense. Buy a good WASR-10, buy a bunch of mags, and spend what you have left on ammo.

If you look around hard enough, you can get a good deal on a quality AK. I paid $600 for my Arsenal SLR105 and $600 again for my CHinese MAK90. Just look up Atlantic Firearms or Wideners.

You can get a decent Non-WASR-10 AK for $450 to $550, mags about $15 each, and some ammo...
For $700, figure you spend $450 for a decent reliable 'SHOOTER' AK - InterOrdnanceInc. 6x 30rd AK Mags for $15 each - $90 Add sling, bayonet, toolkit accessory pack for $30 You're up to $570, add tax (~7%), you're at $609, and that leaves you with $90 for ammo... For ammo, buy some Yugo Surplus for $2.69 a box (15rds/box), figure ~$15 for shipping, leaves you with ~$75 for ammo, so that's 27 boxes (405rds)... For your ~$700 you can get an AK-47, 6 magazines, Bayonet, Cleaning/Tool Kit, Mag Pouch, Oil Bottle, and 405 rounds of ammo, including tax & shipping. 405 rounds is 13.5 magazines worth of ammo. Should be able to do some decent shooting practice, and save 180rds for SHTF. WHen done shooting through your practice ammo, clean your gun (incase corrosive), load up all 6 magazines, then order another case or two of ammo for later A full sealed case of 1280rds Yugo ammo will cost you $215 + about $24 shipping? Approximately $239 total? Store away that crate of ammo for a rainy day, or buy two crates, shoot one, and store away the other. Best of luck to you - have fun! |

He knows that Next Year is a Presidential Election Year, and inevitably, it ALWAYS causes turmoil in the gun markets. You should probably know that by know - since distributors and importers are going to be under a lot of demand, and product availability will suffer. AIM should place orders accordingly so they're not so negatively affected by an ammo, magazine, or firearm shortage just incase... Stock up now while the prices are still lower. |

I would suggest buying a WASR is you want a gun that looks like it was machined by drunken communists, shoots 4+ moa, and might have problems with the firing pin and receiver heattreating after you get around 15,000 rounds through it.
Or you could spend a couple hundred extra and buy something that isnt a piece of shit. |

2 of the many rifles in this discussion that have been brought up...yugo M70AB2 and a early post post (no) ban WASR10.... 
I did have to do some work on my WASR when I got it (first AK I ever owned) but there are resources on the web for correcting the major issues pretty easily. Also, don't rule out the 400 buck AMD65 from Centerfire. I picked mine up two years ago from them when there was an ammo shortage when they had them for 450 with 500 rounds of 7.62 and free shipping. As for the term "russian quality" which has been brought up in this thread, I'm laughing. Now if you could find an earlier SAR1 on the cheap, that wouldn't be a bad option either. ETA fix image |

I'd be careful with the romanian guns right now. My dealer has had several come through his shop that have canted rear sight blocks(part 103 on this diagram). This includes the Draco pistol aks. I asked him today if they were all like that and he said yes. His sample size is something like 100 plus units across Draco, ak, and ban style aks (guns that have a black thumbhole stock and take the single stack mag).
