Although if your comfortable with converting yourself or you have someone who will do it w/o charging you an arm and a leg the Saiga is hard to beat.

It is funny from that perspective.  It also begs the question: could America produce a quality made AK totally in country for a decent price?

Most of my AKs are Arsenal guns, but if I could go back to do it all over I would just get a couple of "certified" WASR-10s from Henderson Defense.  Buy a good WASR-10, buy a bunch of mags, and spend what you have left on ammo.

If you look around hard enough, you can get a good deal on a quality AK. I paid $600 for my Arsenal SLR105 and $600 again for my CHinese MAK90. Just look up Atlantic Firearms or Wideners.

Nice rig. I dig the plum furniture. I already have a 5.45mm SGL31-61 which I paid $800 for when they first came out 2 years ago. It is a very capable, well made and fun rifle to shoot. I have around 3000 rounds through it mostly 60 gr. Silver Bear. Now I have to get a 7.62 AK47. Excuse me, semi-automatic AK-47 clone.

Castigo Cay sits 50% or so completed in my Kindle, likely to never be finished. The suck that is that book cannot be described. Bracken not only dropped the ball with this one, but he tripped, fell and fucked himself with his own thumb somehow in the process.

I've bought 4 WASR's.  There's nothing wrong with them at all.  Just be sure to inspect it first to make sure the front sight is not canted.  Swap out the trigger group for a G2 if it doesn't already have one.

I agree...I like their looks but evertime I get one in my hands...it feels like a 300 dollar gun to me.

The only AKs that have felt better than a $300 gun to me had milled receivers (handguards and safety still felt like crap though).  Upon firing, I was unimpressed.  Higher cost for the same accuracy.

In terms of looks, I like the finish on MAK-90s, but it's not terribly durable.

My WASR was ugly as sin when I got it.  Some Alumahyde and tung oil fixed that.  Now it's just homely.     It took a couple hundred rounds to break in, and I had to fix some front sight cant, but it's been fine since then.  I prefer my ARs but I don't have plans to get rid of my WASR.

I would suggest buying a WASR is you want a gun that looks like it was machined by drunken communists, shoots 4+ moa, and might have problems with the firing pin and receiver heattreating after you get around 15,000 rounds through it.

Or you could spend a couple hundred extra and buy something that isnt a piece of shit.

2 of the many rifles in this discussion that have been brought up...yugo M70AB2 and a early post post (no) ban WASR10....

I did have to do some work on my WASR when I got it (first AK I ever owned) but there are resources on the web for correcting the major issues pretty easily.

Also, don't rule out the 400 buck AMD65 from Centerfire.  I picked mine up two years ago from them when there was an ammo shortage when they had them for 450 with 500 rounds of 7.62 and free shipping.

As for the term "russian quality" which has been brought up in this thread, I'm laughing.

Now if you could find an earlier SAR1 on the cheap, that wouldn't be a bad option either.

I'd be careful with the romanian guns right now. My dealer has had several come through his shop that have canted rear sight blocks(part 103 on this diagram). This includes the Draco pistol aks. I asked him today if they were all like that and he said yes. His sample size is something like 100 plus units across Draco, ak, and ban style aks (guns that have a black thumbhole stock and take the single stack mag).
