Why go thru all that trouble, just watch on real-time streamed on the internet. In my 'berg, they are having a eclipse watching party at the local library staffed by amateur astronomers.

ARFCOM = get both?

I can watch the high quality videos for years after the fact.

Making a simple method for the wife and daughter to SAFELY watch the event in real time is...better...no matter the flaws.

I wish I could watch it with my own flawed meat-lenses...but alas I will be sitting at my desk, doing my job.

So the previous comment about it burning up the spotting scope is bogus?

No, I think that is very likely.  That's why I reduced the aperture on my setup.

I wonder if this would work with a rifle scope?

.....one that I'm not worried about smoking that is.

Trying to build up the courage to try this.

Brunton may not fix it if I smoke this thing

You won't smoke your scope.
It's just light passing through a couple of magnifying lenses.
Hell, I have set up my telescopes to view the Sun.....
Just don't put a camera or any type of sensor on the eyepiece.

We are approaching solar minimum so there are few ( the amateur radio bands have been shit) and I could care less about craters.

Cloudy all day here. I was going to run home at lunch and grab my spotting scope, debating now if it's worth it.

It cleared up enough for me to see most of it.
Taken 2 minutes after peak coverage here.

Full aperture solar filters are available for telescopes of all sizes.  For small scopes they are very affordable.
