What a great utility that site is.

I checked all my passwords, especially my banking and Paypal.

Later on, I'm going to list them all here too, because I'd also like to get everyones opinion on how secure they are.

Thanks.

I tried something close to my banking password, the same style of numbers, caps and letters at least not the real password, and got "About 89 quintillion years."

I'm good with that.

Mine was entirely randomly computer generated.  So it is essentially a crappy but very strong password.

OK, so tell me a nonhacker with no talent for computers about cracking a password. Not the technical details obviously but general nonspecific stuff.

Can a guy go out and google up a program that will automatically test passwords on a specific username on a website like arfcom? Wouldn't the site detect the activity and close the account after x number of failed login attempts?

Just curious about the theoretical, but again not looking for an instruction manual or to educate those who would be nefarious with the specifics.

Most websites aren't built to detect that type of activity.

Yes, there are programs out there that will do this for you. Hydra and Brutus come to mind.

They are slow and painful though.

I typed in a shit load of pass words jut to check it out. Some close to mine though I use different passwords for different things. I put in some stupid ones: ABC123 and FuckMe are both among the top 500'used passwords lol. Even random numbers didn't do well. Best was case sensitive words with numbers. The shorter the word the easier the longer the better.

Using the whole alphabet (a through z) as a password comes up as 780 quintillion years.

Hmmm.  Maybe I should start using that.

ETA:  alphabet, plus 1234567890 at the end brings it up to 374 undecillion years.  I have no idea what an undecillion is, but it sounds cool.

ETA2:  Just learned that an undecillion is a 1 followed by 36 zeros.  Cool.

You've discovered the problem with simple password analysis.

I can guess that your password is abcdef123456 but to a basic analysis program, it would take 600 years.

This.

Simple progression of chars is easy to break.

Also this obviously does not take into account dictionary attacks.
