3 sets of 12 last night at the gym

Only 5-7 depending on the day. I've been working at them for months (almost a year, started at 0), but can't get past that. I'm awesome at pushups though, can do 70-80 with acceptable (break the plane) form, but I suck at pullups.

Anyone hitting the 10 mark, got any tips, other than dropping another 10-20lb?

I dont get it either.  Not just that, but for the bent over dumbbell rows, I do 3 sets of 7 at 90lbs for each arm when its the day to do back weightlifting.  Im 175lbs 36 years old and can only do 14 dead hang palm out pullups.  And Im not dating any victoria secret models either.

used to do 3-5 sets of 10 with a 45# on a dip belt, but that was  a disturbing number of years ago...

If I recall correctly, I recently managed 4 or 5 (with no added weight) but it kicked my ass.  I'm a fucking marshmallow.

stats 5'10" (5'11" on a good day) #195  (more like 185 when pull-ups were easy)

As for how, the hardest part was working on my grip.  Dead hangs every day and shrugs with no straps helped a lot (I used straps for shrugs of 225/315, but did lots of shrugs with 135/185).  Lots of lat pulls (no cheating) as well.

I've done both the traditional "bodybuilding" type workouts and more recently CrossFit type training.

Get good at moving your own body weight first, gymnastics, plyo etc....then focus on targeting specific muscle groups.

Functional fitness translates very well into any other physical goal you might have.

Best was 27 I think, right now if I but the baby down, 15-20. When I'm inshape I can stay around 25 for a max set. I weigh around 210 lbs. Back as a teen I was able to do 15x15 in with the SEAL Warning Order PT

Not anymore

1.  Work on your grip.  If you notice when you do pullups your forearms start to catch fire as you do them.  You're not going to increase your numbers if you can't keep your hands on the bar.

2.  Work the antagonistic muscles.  That means if you are pulling down, you need to also be pushing up.  The antagonistic workout for pullups would be overhead pressing.  That means not just a barbell overhead press, but also dumbell overhead presses, both standing and seated, as well as seated barbell presses and cleans and presses.

3.  Do sets with high numbers.  If you're striving to increase your numbers, then only do high number sets.  When your numbers start to fall off, either quit, or rest enough to get your numbers back up.

That's all I got.

I'm middle aged, but I can still do 25 strict pull-ups (32 going fast), perhaps a few more chin-ups.  I weigh 156 lbs.

When I was younger...55 reps. until I was about 36 years old.

I do three sets of 10 and run a mile at 3/4ths sprint 4-5 times a week for my warmup.

Last time I tried to max out I did 28. . . real ones too all the way down until my arms were straight then back up until chin was above the bar.

Uh...yeah.  I was thinking either a bunch of people missed the 'dead hang' part, don't understand what a dead hang PU is, or we have a ton of fucking phenomenal PT studs on Arfcom.

I'm a skinny little fucker with pretty low bodyfat (never measured w/ calipers, but I estimate I'm at an honest 10%), and I do pull ups, barbells rows, and deadlifts regularly.  I have what I consider to be decent back/pulling strength with respect to my small size, and my max for reverse grip dead hangs is 16 reps (honest reps, not internet reps).

For palms-facing-away grip pull ups, I'm fucking ecstatic when I can eek out 15, and I typically get 13-14.  These are honest dead-hangs with a pause at the bottom.

Funny that we have so many people claiming 20+.  The guy that can do 42 needs to put himself on YouTube.

I fucked up my shoulder a month and a half ago and it is just now healed to the point it doesn't hurt if I do more than 5 pushups in a row.

Quite possibly.  This is the internet and all.

But for the record.  Sgt Instructor, GySgt McKenna made well sure I understood the difference between deadhangs and kipping.   He'd be ashamed if he saw me trying to do crunches or my 3 mile run though...and THAT is no bullshit.

The workout I did before I hurt my back, 400 pushups in about 20 minutes followed by 100 pullups in about 23 minutes, or was it 33 minutes. I don't remember. But to add, all was done while wearing a 20lb vest.

I can get about 18-20 depending on when I implement them into my workout. Body weight 255lbs and I squat 716lbs, bench 568lbs and DL 705lbs, but I've always been good at pullups. My training partners of similiar strength in the powerlifts  usually can get around 10-12 reps.
