The funny thing is, a real deal warrior approached me a few weeks ago when I was eating dinner at a Chinese place before heading home for the night.  This guy was 180 degrees from Dean.  It was in his walk and his talk as well.

That's the way to tell.

Head of security at my old school was former SF. The guy really had one cool story from central America. The rest were about the usual BS. Nothing amazing or fancy. Kuwait? Mostly he sat on his ass apparently. He was cool to talk to.

The way you could really tell was his walk. He'd put on some weight, but still had this "nothing in the world can touch me" walk. That and a few of us saw him haul himself one handed over an eight foot fence while chasing some guy. And when some guy pulled a gun on him in the city to try and mug his wife and violated the 21 foot rule. He broke the guy's arm in two places.

On the flipside of that coin, my wife's brother was in the army for 5 years.  He drove trucks from base to base the whole time save for a stint driving more trucks in Kosovo (? well somewhere in the Balkans).

When military service comes up I have heard people go "wow, the Army huh, what'd you do? I bet you have some stores!".  He unflinchingly says "I drove supply trucks my whole stint".

Unfailingly, he says they go .

That's irritating. My grandfather was USMC infantry and thinks supply guys walk on water.

Here's what you should have asked:

"Why do you do it, Dean?  You some kinda War Junkie?"

He would have looked at you and not said a goddamn thing.

You guys are horrible being mistrusting of a true hero!

He sunk the Kursk for God's sake! He gave those commies what for and you guys have the audacity to question and poke fun at him!

My (Great) Uncle Trev served in Korea and has some great stories, but he's never talked about combat or heroics.

Uncle Trev later became US Marshal in California, now retired.  He's never once bragged about what he's done as a US Marshal.

I know Uncle Trev saved someone's life from a mugger once, but that's only because I heard the story first-hand from the rescued individual.  (Good CCW story)

My point is that real heroes don't need to hype themselves.  Their countenance speaks volumes.

My job is so secret that I do not have mirrors in my house so I do not know what I look like, and won't be able to identify myself if someone shows me a picture with me in it!

Everyone knows the Shadow Warriors are old school. They were disbanded and replaced with Megaforce.

They supply the troops for the SSDG program now.

Where may I obtain the proper form for joining Megaforce?

Will I get to fly airplanes, sink submarines, and shoot Castro?

My policy is simple.
If I meet a stranger, and within the first few minutes of conversation they reveal that they are:

a) Ranger

b) SEAL

c) Force Recon

d) "Green Beret"

e) Delta

f) Sniper

...I consider them to be lying.

The Shadow Of Your Smile

Tony Bennett

The shadow of your smile when you are gone
Will color all my dreams and light the dawn
Look into my eyes my love and see
All the lovely things you are to me

Our wistful little star was far too high
A teardrop kissed your lips and so did I
Now when I remember spring
And all the joy that love can bring

Classic symptoms of methanphetamine addiction and/or schizophernia.

I used to get these guys in my Recruiting Station alot. They are easy to spot, usually having REALLY unbelievable stories like this guy.

Be nice to them, they can be very violent if their make believe world is disrupted. Especially if they are schizophrenic and not on MEDS.

Funny, I just remembered this:  I was standing gate "guard" at RTC Great lakes shortly after basic training when this old scraggly guy came up.  He said he was reporting for duty, and gave his name, which I don't recall.  I was new and really had no clue what to do (this was before 9/11 and there was basically no security except me, the dopey green recruit, with nothing more lethal than a radio.  So I called in and they had someone more senior come out adn talk to him while escorting him out the gate.  Aparently he was some homeless guy with dementia who comes by every once in a while.

I know, dull story, but it was amusing at the time...

--In 2000, when the Chinese were making noise about invading Taiwan, he flew in the copilot's seat of a PSR-72 and dropped a thermonuclear earthquake-producing bomb on their country, to convince them of the futility of invading Taiwan, since we could wipe them out easily with our superior technology.

Well, you can't expect a feller like that to design water suckin' hypersonic airplanes, and fly as PIC, too!

The PSR-72 is made out of the new exotic material alloy and uses the new anti-gravity motors. The EMA and new force fields make it possible to fly 14,000 mph in the atomosphere without melting the entire aircraft. Unfortuanately it can only fly during meteor showers since the big plasma trail is a dead give away.

Guess that's what happens from the Gunny smacking you on the back of the head too hard one too many times. Hopefully he's harmless.
