Shooting it may not have been the best choice. The only reason that snake would've been in your home is if you have a plentiful supply of mice.

We live in the country.

There are indeed a plentiful supply of mice,
but we've pretty much run most of them out of the
house.

I didn't know what kinda snake he was, and we tried to
get him into a can first, but, it wasn't happening.

I'm not sticking my hand into a closet to grab a snake.

Nothing to it. First you put a tourniquet on your forearm, and THEN you grab the snake. Piece of cake.

Poison cake.

Even a rattle snake isn't that dangerous unless it's coiled. Next time try a broom.

At least I've found a practical use for birdshot.
