What is minimum vertical seperation? Isn't it 1000 feet? As long as minimum vertical seperation is maintained the lateral distance can be less than minimum.

Telephoto lenses compress depth.

500' vertical. I have seen the bottom of an Airbus A320 from 500'. On arrival and departure I believe the controlers can have as little as 3000' between a departing aircraft and the one landing behind on the same runway. Near miss is a huge window. I have had weekend warriors pissing themselves with half a mile separation in single engine aircraft at the local aerodrome.

Vertical separation is the important issue. Planes are layered vertically and horizontally overlap each other. Happens all the time. Not even noteworthy. The military does that with entire formations of aircraft.

It is all Bush's fault.

RVSM-Reduced Vertical Separation Minima

1000 feet between 28k and 41k.  Used to be 2000 feet.  Trust me, when your taking a 757 down the throat with 1000 feet between you, its an attention getter.

Just saw a 767 coming at us at around 900 Kts closure.  That looks damn close when it's only going 1000' below you.

And correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't RVSM only apply in European airspace?
Disregard.  Answered my own.

So, on a related note, how big is this squid that's chasing the diver?   (This is not a photoshop, but a real picture, btw)

Is that a small 737 DHL and a much larger wide-body JAL?

If so, they probably are quite a distance apart.  But I doubt 2.5 miles!!

2.5 miles sounds more like IFR separation rules.  VFR separation is typically see and avoid.  Looks like they complied with that....barely.
