That's what I was afraid of and makes the selection process easier.

Bryant 288 series variable speed air handler and variable speed compressor.

I will go out on a limb and say anything else is a compromise.

I'm in an old house with window units and gas heaters, I'm thinking mini-splits are the way to go. There seem to be a lot of cheap imports now, what are the good options?

Among the Chinese brands, Pioneer seems to get the most positive reviews on Amazon and youtube. They're headquartered just outside Miami, and have  sizeable inventory and spare parts.

Their documentation for each model seems more complete than the other brands I looked at.

I just finished installing one of their 2 ton ceiling cassette units, and was favorably impressed with the quality (Disclaimer: I'm not a HVAC tech).

When the entire unit went out in our rental house my HVAC guy said to put in a Payne.  Showed me the part numbers for the major components and replacement parts---identical to Carrier.   His opinion was you pay extra for the Carrier name.

Sold that house but the Payne he installed was a solid, basic unit.

How's Rheem? Just got a quote for a 2 stage TRANE S9V2 and RHEEM Prestige Contour... Go with TRANE?

Rheem is supposed to make a good furnace but the AC condenser coils sound like a bitch to clean unless something changed......
Carrier is now off my list as moving to Mexico.
