+1

Gaston Glock is more to handguns as what Earl Silas Tupper is to plastic kitchenware, or how Firestone is to tires

Yes...

It is hard to know weather to laugh or cry that someone could have made that ridiculous statement in public.

I know I'll get flamed for it, but Bill Ruger should be on the list.

Without a doubt:

John Moses Browning

He invented more firearms than any other gunmaker in the history of the world.

Oh, and...

Paul Mauser

I can't believe only one person has mentioned Paul Mauser.

You guys may not think so, but every single bolt action rifle that cocks on opening and has fwd locking lugs is a Mauser knock off.  And I can just about guarantee that there are more of them than anything Kalashnikov has ever designed.

What'd they design?

I don't know what a lot of these guys designed, actually. There are even more that I haven't heard of but know by last name (Arthur Savage, Richard Jordan Gatling).

The Sten smg.  IIRC Shepperd, Turpin, ENfield (or ENgland, can't remember which).

Degtyaryov (sp?) designer of the DP27, DPM, RP46, RPD & DShK (also with Shpagin of PPSh41 fame) machine guns
PTRD antitank rifle, PPD smg
