Who goes herping (especially in crot habitat) without a DSLR?

Crots are meant to be shot close up.

ETA:  Sounds like you had a productive day OP, nice job.

I usually have the DSLR with me, but I didn't expect to have time to go searching tonight so I didn't take it.

Just giving you a hard time.  Nice shots!  I have gone out a few times without a camera, especially in real rocky areas looking for Crotalus Ruber.  I didn't feel like dicking around with my camera while climbing through and over rock piles on the side of a hill.

Left my camera in the truck on a hike last yr and my buddy got a pic of a white Speckled Rattlesnake 4' off the ground in an ironwood tree. I believe the photo is in the current edition of Herp Nation magazine.

Dammit!  Always Murphy's law.  The Mitchellii around here are usually pink/salmon/orange colored depending on the locale.  They seem to be very adaptive to specific terrain based on location.  Very fascinating.  The one's I've found in the high desert near Barstow look different compared to those in the low desert around Joshua Tree NP.

I had been carrying it earlier in the day. Got into a different canyon and didn't feel like carrying it anymore, had a 300mm f/4 on it.
He got the pic, I got the snake.
Lots of variation in mitchelli, the white ones are amazing.

Excellent day for herping.
Saw a few Copperheads, Black Rat Snakes, Box Turtles, and this fellow. No worries fellows, all were unharmed.
Sorry about the photo quality but all I had was my phone.

This is ARF, where snakes are the libtards equivalent to guns. They are icky and dangerous.
