Quoted: Fenian, everyone you mentioned plus the following: Robin Trower Frank Zappa Johnny Winter (not anymore, he's lost it but his old stuff is amazing) Pat Travers Carlos Santana btw, you're dead right on clapton and page, both are extremely overrated. View Quote Pat "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights" Travers lol...god, I've seen him dozens of times...always put on a good show, but I think the drink was starting to catch up with him the last few times...it was quite some time ago. Trower was another guy I liked in the day, and I've seen him over the years from big venues down to the local clubs. Saw him at the Bayou in DC...there couldn't have been more than 12 people in the audience. We were standing right at the foot of the stage...they start playing, and about the 3rd note he played, my eyes lost focus...they were unbelievably loud...and Robin didn't have much distortion going, so the notes were piercing. Had to retreat to the back of the club for the rest of the set lol. |

Jerry Garcia - always and forever the best, this is what happens when a bluegrass banjo player goes psychedelic/blues. I will miss Jerry for the rest of my life.
Jimi Hendrix - left handed, upside down, AND while doing gymnastic stuff on stage. I saw him in 1969. Reaches across all age groups even today. Jorma Kaukonen - electric or acoustic, still fantastic. Hot Tuna, yay! Carlos Santana - he plays the first 2 notes, and you always know it's him. Has a way of taking you out of this world and into his. |

I always thought these guys were pretty good:
Robbie Robertson Bob Dylan Craig Chaquico Pete Townsend Ritchie Blackmore Roger McGuinn |

I can't believe you guys
And if you're going to start inluding bass (which I agree, Les Claypool does some cool shit), how can you leave out this guy? |

Roy Buchanan. He may not be on your list but I'd almost guarentee he was on Stevie Ray Vaughn's list. Clapton's too. He played a mean blues guitar.

I just breezed through this thread...and saw no mention of Leo Kottke.
I don't play any instruments so technically I guess I really dont know what I am talking about...but in my opinion...my lord...can that guy play. Saw him in concert once...its hard to believe just one person can put out that much sound. Too bad he's a bedwetting socialist. I am looking for recommendations of other accustical guitarists of his caliber. |

In no particular order:
Kirk Hammett Dave Mustane Tom Morello Eddie Van Halen SRV Jimmy Page ...and a BIG AMEN to Cliff Burton!! |

Personally, I think Clapton was awesome in all Derek and the Dominoes and prior incarnations. He kind of went down hill after that. My other favorite guitar players would be:
Duane Allman (played w/Clapton on Layla album) Dicky Bettes (Allman Brothers) Joe Walsh Carlos Santana SRV. |

Quoted: Billy Gibbons(ZZ Top)-Taste, Tone, and Tenacity. Straight up..The Rev. G puts dowm some mean grooves and solos! Tone fatter than your aunt bertha, and hey....the man is just the walking defintion of cool. Alex Lifeson(Rush)-Master player...all around. Songwriter, accomplished player..and on stage goofball!(anyone who has seen them live knows what I mean!) HIGHLY underrated...one of the best guitar players to come out of the 1970s. Dave Gilmore(Pink Floyd)-soul...soul..and more soul!Another bluesman playing in a spaced out rock format. View Quote Great picks -- Listen to Gibons playing Asleep in the Deasert, Leifsen play La Villa Strangeoti or Gilmore doing Comfortably Numb. These guys were way underrated. Gilmore was never the flashiest or fastest axemen but he could pur more feeling into a single note than most guys will manage in there lifetime! I'm also a fan of DiMeaola. I saw him play at a local music store as he was there to demonstrate some guitars. He played for about 45 minutes in the 90 minute show and the place was filled with guitarists. Towards the end he did a Q/A sesion and one of the guys asked him what he thaought of Ingvai and Al said "Oh, you mean Oy Vay" He f*cking smoked! Later, PS. Clapton's been getting dumped on pretty bad here but I'd like to say that he can still play when he wants to. I saw him a couple years ago doing a retrospective of his 'Blues' background on PBS and he was f*cking inspired. |

--SRV--hands down, the greatest guitar talent to ever walk the planet.
--Eddie --Nuno --Audley Freed (saw this guy with Cry of Love in early 90's. HOLY CRAP--smokin blues/rock player. He took me to a higher plane in that show. He's now with the Black Crowes). --Jimi --The Edge --Billy Corgan (ever listen to Siamese Dream? He fucking re-defined fuzz guitar and sheer aura with that record). |

The infamous London subway graffiti was unfinished and misspelled. It was supposed to say "Clapton is good, Hendrix is god."
Clapton was Ok in Cream, but pretty much sucked after that. His tone was thin, NOT because he used Fenders, but because he started using their cheesy "Lace-Sensor" pickups. The standard passive pickups have as much balls as you can give them. Several mentions of SRV tone have been made. Like Hendrix he used VERY thick gauge strings. Both had something like .13 E strings, like acoustic gauges. Both also had 5 springs on their whammy bar. I have seen Eric Johnson twice. On both occasion the audience was mostly guitarist. After about 3 minutes most everybody's jaw was on the floor. His most impressive display was a version of "Are You Experienced?" -- including the backwards parts. To this day I don't exactly know how he did it. |

Hendrix is still king in my book.
George Harrison is the most underated. The guy could play the most complex chords I've ever seen. His musical sense and timing were incredible. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols. No, not the most proficient, but attitude goes along way. He proved you don't have to be a guitar God to make music. The Edge...Very unique sound. He uses the digital-delay effect like it were made for him. |

Many good guitarists listed but I'll add a couple: Frank Marino of Mohogany Rush, Michaelangelo (speed-freak!) and the guitarist for Dream Theater (brain-farted his name)

Another vote for John Petrucci from Dream Theater. Amazing skill and creativity. I'm also a big SRV fan. Overrated: have to agree with Clapton and Page. I love Led Zeppelin, but it's due more to their songwriting and production than Page's actual playing.

I've actually got a record of his. Steve Hunter...didn't he do the Lou Reed live album with another guitarist named Dick Wagner? That's a great guitar album...the intro to Sweet Jane is killer. Buchanan and Lofgren are both from around here...Roy was always in a kind of competition with Danny Gatton...sad and interesting that BOTH committed suicide...Buchanan hung himself in the Fairfax Co. Jail after a routine DUI arrest. What a waste. Same for Danny... |

View Quote Your problem is, you're too deferential. Get a spine already!! When I heard him live after Junior Brown, I didn't like him that much, either. I had heard him come into the middle of Junior's "My Wife Thinks You're Dead" and liked the dirty tone and attack he gave it. Then I picked up his most recent release, "Do You Get The Blues", with Lou Ann Barton, and really liked the style. www.jimmievaughan.com He does not try to be his brother, or any kind of technical virtuoso, and he will always be in the shadow of Stevie Ray. He has his own sound and feeling, and I like it. If you don't, no one's gonna lose any sleep. From your comments, though, it seems he sure has the ability to work YOU up. |

Junior Brown fucking rocks. Download his song Surf Medley IMMEDIATELY if you have never heard it. Bad ass. He really gets into it starting at 4:03.
