Kinda the point of GoFundMe... I don't get why people here make a big deal about them.

It's the cheapest around and I got a good background for future paramedic classes. I'll take that over a 2 week course any day. Tennessee's EMT program is more involved than most. They won't even give us a license unless we pass fisdap and national registry.

Is it really that different from someone applying for a scholarship?
I mean what is applying for a scholarship? Going to people, saying "this is what I want to do and who I am" and asking them for money to pursue your education right? What the gofundme campaign she is doing does is allow you to directly donate to her rather than just tossing money into a scholarship fund that other people will award without your input. |
|
View Quote If I want to pay for someone else's EMT school I'll just throw some money at my cousin. I'm so tired of these gofundme's for stuff that other people have been finding ways to finance for years and years and years. |

How was your Basic 2 semesters? Mine was only 1 ( 3 months) It was a little tougher than I expected. Most of it was reading through the book and power points in class the first semester. Plus a handful of tests over each chapter and definition tests. We had to memorize a bunch of medical abreviations and test for those each week. And studying for the 6 fisdaps. Which are scenario based so you have to know the ins and outs of medical and trauma. The second semester was all hands on learning skills and also studying for the 3 fisdaps and national registry. We had to get checked off on 25 different skills in front of the students and then a final checkoff for the teacher. Then we had to get checked off on one skill for the state board. You go in not knowing which skill they're going to test you on. After that you had to pass the final fisdap with an 80 and then take the national registry. If it wasn't for fisdap and national registry I probably would not have had to study except for learning abreviations. |

So gofundme is turning into the internet equivalent of standing out by the highway off-ramp with a begging sign scribbled on cardboard? Only without all the hassle of standing around in the hot sun? This person has a job, but no desire or ability to plan, scrimp, and save for her dreams and goals (which are NOT heartbreakingly out of reach for a normal person, like some life-changing surgery costs are for children, etc.) and just wants US to throw OUR OWN HARD EARNED CASH AT HER???!!!! We need an answer to gofundme...is there already a "gofuckyourself" website in existence? If not there should be. View Quote Back in the 50's there was this show Queen for a Day. I think it started in the 40's on radio. Anyway, these women would come on and tell their sob stories and the audience would applaud to choose the winner. They had the first instance of the GIVEAFUCKOMETER and they would put the camera on it for the TV audience. The more things change.................. |

Fuck that. Get a job like the rest of us to pay for it. Or get a loan from a bank.

Why does it seem that so many females in the EMT world are big girls? |

Shit for $4,000 she might as well spend another 2 and go to paramedic school
|

I worked part-time at a grocery store during EMT-Basic school, and got a little assistance from my parents. I worked full-time on a transfer ambulance during Paramedic school, and swapped shifts with another EMT whose classes were opposite mine.
When I went through fire academy, I worked a 48 hour shift every weekend on a 911 ambulance. It sucked, but I worked for it and can be proud of my accomplishments. I also rented a room in a crappy house in the ghetto and drove a 15 y/o POS truck at the same time.

I paid my way through EMT school, Fire Academy, college, and now a graduate program (with the help of financial aid). I want to go to paramedic school but you don't see me raising money. It's called saving and being responsible with your money.

Every program in the country has to teach to the same DOT standards, so your 'rigorous' curriculum isn't any different than anyone else's; everyone does roughly the same clinical hours (2 shifts on a rig and not even a full nursing shift in an ED isn't exactly a lot... CNA students probably get more time practicing feeding people at SNFs), everyone has to do scenarios on the spot, no one knows the mystery module on skills day, majority of states require NR to initially certify or license you, etc. It sounds like your program injected several levels of BS by dragging it out and requiring high-stakes FISDAPs to inflate NREMT pass rates (and this is usually a corrective reaction to a high institutional fail rate... food for thought). Basic isn't that hard, so get it out of your head that your nationally standardized vocational training is superior because it cost 2-3x as much and took twice as long. |

WTF are FISDAPs?
Never heard of such a thing until this thread.
