You are most welcome my lady...

A lot of it is some of this and a pinch of that. Just do it to taste. For me the vinegar is the key. Nut enough they can be a litter bitter.

Is this some New Years Day tradition??

Yes.  After the close of the War of Northern Aggression it was said that Southerners would be lucky if they had black eyed peas to eat in the coming new year.  From what I've been told it started either in Richmond or through Sherman's march route.

The story goes the Yankee bastages burned or destroyed every thing but the black eyed peas. They had never seen them before and thought they were spoiled because of the black spot on them so they left them.

After the war they were "Lucky" to have them to eat. or so the story goes.................

New Years Day soup

Black eyed peas
Onion
Collards
Tomatoes
Hot Italian sausage
simmered in chicken broth

It turned out to be pretty tasty.

Onion, garlic, ham bone, rotel.  Cornbread, mmm.  Can't wait until they're done!  I think I'll have two bowls for added luck.  I feel good about 2007.

I usually make a big batch from scratch with
2 cups of Black eyed peas soaking overnight
10-12 pieces of bacon cut into small pieces fried.
Onions, garlic, and a couple potatoes addes to the bacon and grease.
drain peas and add to mixture.
2 cups spring water
simmer 20 minutes or so

Add brown sugar and other sweet stuff like honey, or regular cane sugar.

Serve with cornbread.
It is really good.

This year I just opened a can of black eyed peas and added a couple pieces of bacon.
It was very good!

Happy new year.

It is for those of us who were raised in the South.

For all greens, this is a very easy way to prepare. Cook a few strips of bacon to crisp and remove strips from grease. Throw greens in the grease and "wilt", crumble the bacon and toss into the greens, salt and pepper to taste.

Not necessarily.

I've lived my whole life (born & raised) in southeastern Virginia, and my mom was born & raised in Georgia before moving to Virginia in the 1950s.

I've never heard of eating soul food for New Year's.  I like ham, but most of this other stuff y'all can keep.
