I had no idea a .17 HMR operated at those kinds of pressures. Wow.

A cleaning jag.  You know, those things you screw onto the end of a cleaning rod to clean your weapons with.  You can see it sticking out of the end of the barrel in his picture.

Oh thank God! For a minute there I thought he had left an air force lawyer in his barrel.

ETA: Who the hell doesn't check the bore before shooting???

Not .17 HMR.

.17 VHA is a wildcat centerfire round based on the 4.6x30 case.

I always finish with a bore-snake when I clean - I put oil on the tail end, and use that as my light coat of oil preservation method.  Glad I do that now.

A little surprised that such a small cartridge failed so catastrophically; and that the failure mode involves so much blowback into the shooters face.  Most Kaboom's reports I've seen tend to show the the force blown down or to the sides, but almost never back like that.  Scary.

I think I'll be skipping the T/C phase in my shooting maturity progression...

Maybe patch was tight, unthreaded jag on withdrawal stroke?

This is exactly why I always push my jags through and out of the muzzle.
